Guttmacher pushes propaganda about the abortion pill. Here's the truth.

Abortion PillAbortion Pill·By Carole Novielli

Guttmacher pushes propaganda about the abortion pill. Here's the truth.

In response to the news that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is undertaking a safety study on the abortion pill, the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute has published a so-called "fact sheet" it claims will counter "false narratives" and "misinformation" about the so-called "safety" of the abortion pill.

But this 'fact sheet' is short on facts.

Key Takeaways:

  • Guttmacher claims abortion pills are "safe," that ER visits don't call abortion drugs' "safety into question," that claims of coerced abortions are merely "political" and anecdotal, that abortion doesn't cause mental health problems, and that abortion (the intentional killing of preborn children) is "needed."

  • The abortion pill ends human lives and is not safe for women; there are significant risks, and recent research claims that the adverse event rate may be 22x higher than indicated on the FDA's label.

  • Guttmacher claims restricting "medication abortion" will not solve coercions, yet the removal of the in-person dispensing for the drug in 2023 caused these incidents to surge.

  • Planned Parenthood tells abortion clients that any potential emotional effects after taking abortion pills could also include feeling "depressed" — which it categorizes as "not normal."

  • Guttmacher's goal is to expand abortion; Big Abortion has a goal of making the abortion pill available for sale over the counter.

The Background:

The Guttmacher Institute claims to be a "leading research and policy organization" advocating for the expansion of abortion under the euphemism of "sexual and reproductive health and rights."

Never miss the latest news in the fight for life.

Its short term goal is to "[d]efend equitable access to safe, legal, affordable and comprehensive abortion care, including by working to eliminate abortion coverage restrictions."

Guttmacher was founded and later renamed after Alan F. Guttmacher, a former Planned Parenthood president and past Vice President of the American Eugenics Society (AES). Frederick S. Jaffe, listed on an archived website as Guttmacher's first president, was once described as “very abusive” by a longtime colleague. He also authored a controversial memo advocating eugenics through compulsory sterilization and abortion.

Guttmacher is a former “special affiliate” of Planned Parenthood which has funneled millions into Planned Parenthood's coffers, and is funded by the Buffett and Packard Foundations, which were early investors in the abortion pill. It is also funded by the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, which joined the others in funding abortion pill studies and the discredited Turnaway Study.

Key Claims Debunked:

"Misinformation about abortion care is rampant and being weaponized at state and federal levels to justify wide-ranging restrictions across the United States," claimed Guttmacher.

Claim #1: Abortion pills are 'safe'

Guttmacher claims...

  • "Mifepristone—one of two drugs used in the most common medication abortion regimen in the United States—is safe and effective."

  • "Anti-abortion policymakers and activists are using false and misleading claims to cast doubt on mifepristone’s safety and efficacy"

FACTS:

  • Abortion pills are never 'safe' for preborn babies, ending the lives of 7.5 million between 2000 and 2024.

  • The 2023 mifepristone label for mifepristone includes a black box warning of serious bleeding, infection, and possible sepsis. Yet, adverse event report requirements for the abortion pill were removed in 2016, after abortion pill maker Danco Laboratories obtained the funding from abortion industry insiders to file the New Drug Approval (NDA) supplement.

  • An analysis of insurance claims data by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), which found nearly 11% of women (10.93%) experience complications, like sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or other serious or life-threatening adverse events, meaning one in 10 women likely experience at least one serious complication after taking mifepristone. This rate is 22 times higher than the “less than 0.5 percent” serious adverse events rate reported by the FDA on the mifepristone label.

  • An incestuous abortion pill funding trail has led from investors in abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories and generic manufacturer GenBioPro to various groups, location sites, and sponsors behind abortion pill clinical trials and studies which claim to show the abortion pill’s safety and effectiveness.

Efficacy is based on the FDA's approved 10-week gestational limits, yet Big Abortion flouts these limits, prescribing the drug well into the second and third trimester — when failure rates increase.

Claim #2: ER visits don't call drug's 'safety into question'

Guttmacher claims...

"People may seek care at emergency rooms during or after a medication abortion for a range of reasons and their seeking such care does not call mifepristone’s safety into question," Guttmacher claimed, adding that...

FACTS:

  • No state law "criminalizes" women for simply seeking abortion.

  • Mifepristone's label acknowledges “2.9 to 4.6 percent" (21.2K to 44K) of women who take abortion drugs end up in the emergency room.

  • FDA’s medication guide acknowledges as many as 7% of women (15K to 51.2K) will require surgical intervention after taking mifepristone ‘to stop "bleeding’ or to complete the abortion.

  • Under the FDA’s REMS, certified prescribers must have the "[a]bility to provide surgical intervention in cases of incomplete abortion or severe bleeding, or have made plans to provide such care through others, and be able to assure patient access to medical facilities equipped to provide blood transfusions and resuscitation, if necessary."

  • There are no requirements to report adverse events other than death. For decades, the abortion industry has participated in a scheme to hide abortion pill complications by instructing women at the point of sale to present to the ER and lie, claiming a natural miscarriage instead. This is not evidence of safety, it is evidence of patient abandonment and the manufacturers of the drug failing to decertify those who flout REMS.

Claim #3: Coerced abortion claims are 'political'

Guttmacher claims...

  • "Efforts to restrict mifepristone based on claims about reproductive coercion are rooted in politics, not facts"

  • "Relying on a handful of anecdotal allegations... these coercion narratives are designed to justify restrictions on medication abortion, especially telehealth provision, and to target shield law providers with baseless claims that they are complicit in coerced abortions."

FACTS:

  • The abortion pill's approval process was "political" as is calling horrific stories of abortion pill coercion "anecdotal allegations."

  • Coercion is becoming a growing concern surrounding mail-order abortion dispensing, as predators hide behind computer screens and clandestinely slip the mailed drug into the beverage of their intended pregnant victim, or force the drug upon victims some other way. These cases are coming to light not only from pro-life media but local mainstream media outlets.

  • This month, Live Action News published audio of a police dispatch call alleging a man tried to force his daughter to take abortion pill.

  • Heartbeat International (HBI) recently launched a national tracker documenting reported abortion pill poisonings and forced abortions across the United States. The tracker is hosted by Pregnancy Help News.

  • No such tracker exists within pro-abortion organizations, which claim to support women's "right" to make a choice to end a pregnancy.

  • Guttmacher claims restricting "medication abortion" will not solve coercions, yet the removal of the in-person dispensing for the drug in 2023 caused these incidents to surge. Despite this, Big Abortion chooses to oppose in-person dispensing.

Claim #4: Abortion doesn't cause 'subsequent mental health problems'

Guttmacher claims, "There is no evidence which indicates that having an abortion causes subsequent mental health problems."

FACTS:

  • Even pro-abortion groups admit that women can suffer emotional trauma after abortion.

  • In an online video posted to YouTube, even Planned Parenthood acknowledged that it is "normal" to feel "a wide range of emotions after an abortion." These emotions, it says, may include "anger, anxiety, sadness, or relief. Maybe all at the same time."

  • Planned Parenthood also tells abortion clients that any potential emotional effects after taking abortion pills could also include feeling "depressed" — which it categorizes as "not normal."

  • Live Action and Live Action News have documented testimonies of women who can't stay silent after experiencing abortion trauma. "In reality, abortion – an intervention to end a pregnancy so that it does not result in a live birth – can deeply impact multiple parties: the child, the mother, the father, the siblings, other family members, and society," Live Action's report stated.

  • Abortion advocates often point to studies that show a decrease in anxiety immediately following abortion, such as the debunked Turnaway Study; but, as Live Action's report indicates, "the reality is that post-abortive psychological distress manifests in many ways. Research on long-term anxiety indicates that post-abortive women fare worse in this regard than their peers who either carry to term or experience a natural pregnancy loss."

  • Planned Parenthood's deceptive marketing strategy has led women to believe that abortion is a positive for their lives, luring pregnant women into their centers believing the abortion profiteer is there to assist them in making the best choice.

  • Big Abortion often lies to women about what an abortion does and about the development of the preborn child. Self-managed abortion is now resulting in many women seeing the bodies of their aborted babies — and could be the impetus for the industry now acknowledging the emotional impact.

Claim #5: Abortion is 'needed'

Guttmacher claims...

FACTS:

  • Abortion is the targeting of preborn children for a violent death in the womb. No number of abortions could justify the taking of a distinct innocent human life.

  • Guttmacher recently noted that telehealth abortion with the ability to mail abortion pills to abortion seekers across the U.S., even into pro-life states, has contributed to the increased abortion numbers since the end of Roe v. Wade.

  • Adding to the influx are "shield laws" passed by pro-abortion states to prevent abortionists in those states from being prosecuted for sending abortion drugs into states where it is illegal. These laws do not protect women. They protect abortion (and abortion profiteers).

The Bottom Line:

Guttmacher denies the humanity of the preborn child, thereby endorsing abortion on demand. The organization is not only founded by eugenicists but is funded by abortion philanthropists just to advance abortion.

In addition, "self-managed" abortion has been part of a decades-old strategy of abortion groups like Guttmacher and others who desire to fast track over-the-counter abortion pills, no matter the consequences to women or their preborn babies.
