Trump reinstates Mexico City Policy, halting US funding of international abortions

President Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy on Friday, once again preventing U.S. taxpayer dollars from funding abortions overseas, which had been allowed under the Biden-Harris administration.

Introduced by President Ronald Reagan, the pro-life executive order known as the Mexico City Policy has been reinstated under every Republican president since then. It renders international pro-abortion groups ineligible for U.S. funding unless they agree to stop promoting or committing induced abortions — the direct and intentional killing of preborn children. After Trump first took office in 2017, he expanded the rule into the “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance” policy, increasing the number of federal agencies that are prohibited from handing out taxpayer funding to foreign non-profits that commit or promote abortion.

On Friday, while traveling to see the devastating wildfire damage in California, Trump signed the presidential memorandum reinstating the Mexico City Policy. According to Real Clear Politics, “A readout of the Trump order states that the president will reinstate the policy, as he did previously in 2017, ensuring ‘that no U.S. taxpayer money supports foreign organizations that perform or actively promote abortion in other nations.’ It also extends the policy to apply to ‘global health assistance,’ as the president had ordered in 2020 during his previous term.”

Live Action founder and president Lila Rose responded to Trump’s decision on X, stating, “GREAT move by President Trump reinstating the Mexico City policy which ensures American taxpayers do NOT fund the killing of babies overseas!

Next up: Let’s do the same thing for American babies and defund every cent of the $700 million tax dollars from Planned Parenthood.”

The pro-abortion Center for Reproductive Rights noted the move on X as well, referring to the Mexico City Policy as the “Global Gag Rule” because it does not allow referrals for abortion:

The organization complained that some abortion-committing “operations will likely shutter or be forced to stop providing this essential care” and that the policy “VIOLATES international human rights standards….”

Intentionally killing innocent human beings cannot logically be considered a human right.
