South Carolina lawmaker says all people deserve life, no matter how small

On August 30, South Carolina legislators voted 67-38 to approve a bill that would protect all preborn children from abortion, with exceptions for babies conceived in rape or incest. On August 31, as the House took a final vote and sent the pro-life bill to the Senate, State Rep. Adam Morgan spoke out in favor of the bill, the first to be introduced in the state since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. The speech featured an analogy between pro-life thought and a classic children’s book.

Morgan recalled that he was reading his young children the Dr. Seuss book, Horton Hears a Who. “I was struck with the very obvious allegory that is in Horton Hears a Who,” he said. “If you don’t remember the story, there’s a bunch of tiny people that live on this little flower thing and nobody believes they’re there or thinks about them or regards them. They’re voiceless in a lot of ways. But one person hears them. And they’re yelling, ‘We are here! We are here! We are here!’ And nobody really cares or notices except for one guy, one elephant. And he tries desperately to tell everybody but nobody really cares or believes him. They mock him. They ignore it. They don’t really regard the people.”

Together, we can end abortion and create a future where every child is cherished and every mother is supported.

That elephant, Horton, tries to protect the community of tiny people he has discovered. Morgan recited one of the most famous lines from the book: “A person’s a person no matter how small,” and said that if the bill becomes law, small people will be protected in South Carolina. Because of that, there will be more giggles and laughing in the future, because preborn children will be protected from abortion and be allowed to live their lives.

“Today is a great day in South Carolina, but our work is not finished,” said Morgan. “I hope you vote for this bill if you’re on the line, if you’re pro-life, if you’re struggling with it. And even if you don’t vote for this bill, our work is not finished here as many on both sides of the aisle have made the point. We’re gonna have a lot more kids in South Carolina. We better continue to protect those lives and care for the mothers and care for the families and make the right policy decisions that make them have a better, more productive, prosperous life. So let’s continue to work together to protect the life and liberty of South Carolinians, all people, no matter how small.”
