Religious leaders attempt to sanction abortion through facility ‘blessing’

Religious leaders in Maryland are making headlines for a ceremony they held in which they “blessed” an abortion facility where innocent preborn children are mercilessly slaughtered.

A New York Times article describes the ceremony, which included a Baptist minister, a Presbyterian pastor, and a Jewish cantor. The trio walked through Women’s Health MD with burning incense, saying they wanted “to show that religion could be a source of support for abortion rights.”

“You all are blessings to those who come to you for care during some of their most vulnerable and sometimes painful moments,” the Rev. Katey Zeh told abortion facility workers. According to the article, Zeh is part of an organization called Religious Community for Reproductive Choice (formerly Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice). Since at least 2017, it has “blessed” 10 abortion facilities in an effort to give a religious sanction to the killing of preborn children. Zeh was also named to the clergy board at Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 2021, though it is unclear if she is still a member.

Also interviewed for the article was the Rev. Jim Lewis, an 89-year-old pastor who has been helping women access abortion since before Roe v. Wade. Lewis claimed that the church is called to minister to the “people outcast” — meaning he should help women access abortion. “We had a serious repression of the real gospel message that looks after people who are being beaten up,” he said of the time before Roe v. Wade.

READ: The Bible isn’t silent about human life or abortion. Here’s how we know.

What is missing from these messages is that the real oppressed and outcast victims of abortion are the preborn children who are killed. According to its website, Women’s Health MD commits abortions up to 16 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the preborn child is killed via the dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedure, in which he is brutally ripped apart limb by limb. Numerous studies have shown that the child can very likely feel the pain of being dismembered.

It is true that women seeking abortion need help and support, but true help and support would enable them to choose life for their children, not kill them. Ministries like pregnancy resource centers and other similar organizations offer such assistance. Despite the attempt of these religious leaders to somehow sanction the shedding of innocent blood, true religion upholds the beauty and dignity of every human life, born and preborn.
