New young adult book promotes abortion

A new book marketed to teenagers features a protagonist who gets an abortion, with the decision being presented as positive.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hannah V. Sawyerr was named the Youth Poet Laureate of Baltimore in 2016.

  • She has published several books, the latest of which is titled "Truth Is" and was published in September.

  • "Truth Is" was named a finalist for the 2025 National Book Awards under the "Young People's Literature" category.

  • The book features a 17-year-old protagonist who gets an abortion. Sawyerr said she intended the book specifically to promote abortion to teenaged readers.

The Details:

Word in Black highlighted Sawyerr's novel, which tells the story of 17-year-old Truth Bangura, an aspiring poet. After she gets pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's child, she chooses to have an abortion and then writes a poem about it. In an essay for Ms. Magazine, Sawyerr said she wrote the book as a response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and intentionally created it to be "a pro-choice novel in every sense of the phrase."

Sawyerr further makes it clear that abortion is meant to be the right choice for Truth, and that "Truth Is" is meant to serve not just as fiction, but as a resource to promote abortion to teenagers. “We can’t be with young people, 24/7 and so we don’t really know what they’re exposed to,” she said. “And I think literature is a very safe and a very reliable way to learn about these things.”

Unsurprisingly in today's pro-abortion culture, "Truth Is" was a finalist for the 2025 National Book Awards.

Why It Matters:

Abortion activists are increasingly working to indoctrinate children and teenagers on abortion as a positive, and a way to solve any and all of their problems. Teen Vogue, for example, ran an op-ed telling girls that abortion will not only give them freedom, but make them popular. The magazine, which has since shuttered, also advised girls on how to get birth control without their parents' knowledge or consent.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has been even more insidious; children are referred to Planned Parenthood through avatars intentionally meant to appeal to young users.

Another book, "Abortion is Everything," was published recently by Amelia Bonow, the founder of the "Shout Your Abortion" movement. The book calls abortion a superpower that gives human beings the ability to shape their destinies. Still another children's book promoted abortion with an aborted child described as a "happy ghost."

The Bottom Line:

Abortion takes a human life. It does not offer the ability to have a better life, provide happiness, or ensure freedom. And it is horrific for teenagers to be given this kind of deadly propaganda at a time when they are at their most impressionable.
