Switzerland's birth rate hits all-time low

According to a report recently released from Switzerland's Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the country's birth rate has reached an all-time low with just 1.28 births per woman.

Key Takeaways:

  • Switzerland recorded 78,200 births in 2025.

  • The fertility rate stands at just 1.28 births per woman, well below the replacement rate of 2.1, and is at an all-time low.

  • Despite the decline, the country remains a world leader in assisted suicide deaths and "death tourism."

The Details:

In 2025, Switzerland had 78,200 births, 100 fewer than 2024. According to the FSO, this marked the fourth consecutive year that births had dropped, and was a 10% decline over births registered in 2015.

The country's fertility rate stands at just 1.28 births per woman — a significant drop from 1.54 a decade ago, and substantially lower than the 2.1 replacement rate. This record-low number is also lower than the EU average, which is 1.34.

Never miss the latest news in the fight for life.

According to the report, if the trends continue, deaths are projected to outpace births in the mid 2030s.

Zoom Out:

Researchers point to a number of reasons why countries are experiencing declining birth rates, including economic difficulties, housing challenges, and uncertainty in the labor market.

However, the lasting effects of the culture of death — including abortion and assisted suicide rates — are rarely considered.

Though it is experiencing a demographic crisis, Switzerland remains one of the world's leaders in assisted suicide deaths. In many countries, 'assisted death' laws are often accompanied by stipulations that those accessing assisted suicide be considered terminally ill; however, Switzerland has no such requirements and allows physically healthy individuals to legally end their own lives.

The country is also home to Pegasos, an organization that specializes in helping people kill themselves. Founded by Philip Nitschke, who is commonly known as “Dr. Death, Pegasos allows foreigners to participate in what has been called “death tourism,” where they pay large amounts of money to commit suicide.

In April, Live Action News reported the story of a physically healthy mom from the United Kingdom (UK) who worked with Pegasos to travel to Switzerland to end her life. In 2022, a pair of sisters from Arizona went missing, only for friends and family to later learn the women had both undergone assisted suicide in Switzerland, despite the fact that they were healthy.

Unfortunately, these stories are not unusual.

The Bottom Line:

In order for a society to thrive, all life has to be cherished and valued. A country that deems it acceptable to kill those considered 'less-than' — whether they are in the womb, elderly, or simply tired of living — should not be surprised when it fails to flourish.
