Nebraska measure would legalize abortion through birth

pregnancy, abortion, Facebook

Abortion advocates are now setting their sights on Nebraska, looking to amend the state constitution to allow abortion through birth.

A pro-abortion coalition has filed with the Nebraska secretary of state, announcing they would be launching a petition in an effort to get their abortion initiative on the ballot next November. The coalition, known as “Protect Our Rights,” includes the ACLU of Nebraska, I Be Black Girl, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska, the Women’s Fund of Omaha, Nebraska Appleseed, and more.

“We’ve filed ballot initiative language to ensure Nebraskans can get the care they need with compassion and privacy, and without government interference,” they said in a statement. “We know that Nebraska lawmakers won’t stop until they’ve completely stripped Nebraskans of their access to essential abortion care, which is why it’s time to protect our rights.”

This is what that “essential… care” looks like:

Currently, preborn children are protected after 12 weeks gestation in Nebraska. If abortion was to be added as a right in the state constitution, as the coalition hopes, that law would be erased, as well as any other potential pro-life laws.

Under the initiative, abortion would be protected in the state constitution through fetal viability, and when needed to “protect the life or health of the pregnant patient.” Viability is essentially a meaningless term, especially as premature children are able to survive at younger and younger gestational ages. One abortionist has even admitted that viability can mean whatever the abortionist wants it to mean. Furthermore, including “health” as a reason for abortion is frequently left undefined in law or vague enough to allow abortion at any time, for any reason, throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

“Nebraska’s law currently allows abortion throughout the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, but that isn’t enough for the abortion industry and activists who are trying to write second- and third-trimester abortions into our constitution. This amendment would allow for abortion until the moment of birth,” Nebraska Right to Life Executive Director Sandy Danek told Life News. “This ballot measure is not pro-choice, it’s pro-abortion, and it does not reflect the values of Nebraskans.”
