Scottish National Party cancels pro-life event after pro-abortion backlash
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), a pro-life organization in the United Kingdom, has announced that the Scottish National Party (SNP) has cancelled an SPUC event about abortion coercion.
The Scottish National Party has cancelled an event on abortion coercion that was to be held by the pro-life group Society for the Protection of Unborn Children at the SNP conference.
Though the SNP gave approval for the event in August, it was canceled on October 11 after pro-abortion objections.
The SPUC has announced it will seek action against the SNP.
This is the latest example of an attempt to silence pro-lifers in the UK.
SPUC's event on abortion coercion was scheduled to take place on October 17, alongside the SNP's Conference in Aberdeen.
The pro-life organization booked its event, titled, "No Law to Protect Her: The Reality of Coerced Abortion," in August. At the time, there were no concerns from the SNP.
However, Herald Scotland reports that all changed when a pro-abortion group, Women for Independence (WFI), got wind of the event. The group submitted a petition with 200 signatures calling for the event's cancellation, claiming it was “being presented as raising awareness on ‘the reality of coerced abortion’, this is merely a progressive veil for their outdated and bigoted beliefs."
On October 11, SNP officials announced the Party was revoking its approval and cancelling the SPUC event.
An SNP spokesperson told Herald Scotland:
“Following concerns being raised by SNP members we have taken the decision to revoke permission to SPUC to hold a fringe event at our conference.
We want SNP conference to be a place where all members can feel comfortable and it is clear our initial decision was wrong as it did not achieve that.”
SPUC has now said it will seek legal advice for any actions it may take against the SNP, calling the political group's actions a breach of the Equality Act of 2010.
SPUC’s Executive Director, Michael Robinson, responded to the cancellation, saying:
“Our fringe event was on the subject of coerced abortion as we believe that no woman in Scotland should be coerced or pressured into having an abortion. The First Minister must now categorically state his views on this important issue: does he agree with SPUC that Scottish women should be legally protected from coerced abortion, if so why has he allowed a panel of expert women to be cancelled from his conference? Or is it the position of the SNP that women should not have specific coerced abortion legal protections?”
Preventing debate and discussion and cancelling valid viewpoints are behaviours associated with totalitarian regimes around the world, the rule of the mob has replaced the rule of law within the SNP.
Free speech has been increasingly challenged in the UK, as buffer zone laws restrict pro-life activity and several teachers report being fired for stating their pro-life beliefs. This is yet another example of an attempt to silence voices willing to stand for life.
