Poll: Majority of Americans now support overturning of Roe v. Wade
According to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey, the majority of Americans now support the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court ruling one year after it overturned Roe v. Wade.
According to the poll, “52% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of the court overturning Roe v. Wade, including 37% who Strongly Approve” of the decision. That is an increase of two percent over polling from June 2022 when just 50% approved of the Dobbs ruling. Forty-four percent (44%) currently disapprove of the Dobbs ruling and 36% strongly disapprove of the decision.
The survey was conducted from June 25-27, 2023, a full year after the June 24, 2022 ruling that led to violent attacks against pro-life organizations. The Supreme Court decision did not prohibit abortion but allowed states to pass laws protecting preborn children from abortion at any point in pregnancy. Under Roe, states were forced to allow abortion until the so-called age of viability, largely viewed to be 24 weeks though children born as early as 21 weeks have survived.

Rasmussen Reports asked those surveyed, “Last year, the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, so that each state can now determine its own laws regarding abortion. Do you approve or disapprove of the court overturning Roe v. Wade?” Fifty-two percent said they did approve.
In January 2023, a Knights of Columbus-Marist Poll revealed that 69% of Americans want abortion to be significantly restricted, despite the fact that 61% of those surveyed consider themselves to be pro-choice. According to that poll, 79% of Americans do not want abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy, as was allowed under Roe v. Wade and as abortion advocates and pro-abortion politicians are seeking. In addition, the poll indicates that 69% of Americans want abortion restricted even earlier than six months, the so-called assumed point of ‘viability’. Currently, states can still allow abortion through all nine months of pregnancy for any reason or can protect all preborn children from abortion at any point.
