Influential family and pro-life advocate Dr. James Dobson dies at 89

Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and longtime pro-life advocate, died Thursday at the age of 89. According to an announcement from the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, he is survived by “his wife of 64 years, Shirley; their children, Danae and Ryan; daughter-in-law Laura; and two beloved grandchildren.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Influential leader and pro-life advocate Dr. James Dobson has died.
  • Dobson founded a number of ministries and organizations devoted to family and pro-life values.
  • He was an outspoken advocate for life and was unafraid to publicly state his pro-life beliefs.

Pro-Life Legacy:

A child psychologist and family advocate, Dobson worked for decades promoting family values and Christian principles. After founding Focus on the Family in 1977, he went on to establish other organizations and ministries, including the Family Research Council, the Family Policy Alliance, and the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. He was also involved in the establishment of the Alliance Defending Freedom, a legal advocacy group that regularly fights for the rights of preborn human beings, parental rights, free speech, religious freedom, and more.

As part of his advocacy work, Dobson often spoke against abortion.

In 2020, he released a statement lamenting the decision of Colorado lawmakers to refuse to pass legislation that would have protected children born alive after abortions.

“Make no mistake, this is not about ‘abortion access’ or the ‘right to choose.’ This is not about ‘bundles of cells’ or ‘clumps of tissue.’ This is not about ‘my body, my choice,’ or any other despicable euphemism or excuse employed to minimize the horror of killing an unborn child in the womb,” Dobson said, continuing:

This is about the tiny survivors of ‘choice.’ This is about precious boys and girls, made in the image of God, who survive an attempt to end their lives.

This is about whether medical professionals—who take an oath to bring healing and not harm—should be required to ‘exercise the same degree of professional skill, care and diligence to preserve the life and health’ of a child born alive after an attempted abortion that they would for any other child.

This is about leaving a helpless and wounded baby to die alone on a porcelain table.

In 2019, he wrote, “I’ve long thought that Roe v. Wade was perhaps the greatest evil ever endorsed by the U.S. Supreme Court. While it is no longer surprising, it is horrific that some of our politicians continue to promote and defend the murder of innocents through the evil of abortion, and it is equally appalling that we as a society continue to stand still for it.”

In a 2018 statement, he called abortion “a grievous tragedy of incalculable size and scope,” calling on others to join him and his wife to “pray fervently that our nation would once-and-for-all end the national tragedy that is abortion.”

His organizations were also regularly involved in pro-life work; filing lawsuits, endorsing lawmakers, promoting pro-life values, and other advocacy work in the fight against abortion.

What We’re Hearing:

In a statement announcing his death, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute said he “dedicated his life to strengthening marriages, guiding parents, and defending biblical values by championing the central role of family in America.”

“Dr. Dobson was a pioneer—a man of deep conviction whose voice shaped the way generations view faith, family and culture,” Gary Bauer, senior vice president of public policy at the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, said. “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped equip countless families to thrive in a world of shifting values. He was a mentor, a counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times.”

Dobson’s son, Ryan, posted a tribute on his website, saying:

My dad, Dr. James Dobson, has gone home to be with the Lord.

I’m walking through the kind of grief that words can’t quite reach. But even in the middle of it, I keep returning to this verse:

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” —John 3:17
That was my dad’s heart.

Yes, he was bold. Yes, he spoke hard truths. But beneath all of it was a deep, quiet desire to help families, to protect children, and to introduce people to Jesus. Not to condemn. To save. To restore. To heal.

He didn’t just preach it—he lived it. With me. And with his grandchildren.

His greatest hope wasn’t just that the world would hear him—but that generations after him would know the love of Christ and walk in truth.

That legacy lives on in my family—and in so many of yours.

We’re spending this time together—grieving, remembering, praying, and holding tight to the promises of God….

“The world has lost a mighty voice for truth and an incredibly influential servant of Christ today,” said ADF CEO, President, and Chief Counsel Kristen Waggoner in a news release. “Dobson’s bold leadership and commitment to the Gospel shaped the lives of so many and will continue to do so many years after his passing.”
