Human Matters with Sami Parker: When abortion isn't really a 'choice'

In episode four of Human Matters with Sami Parker, Parker discusses the fallacy of a woman's "choice" when it comes to abortion, pointing out that countless women end up getting abortions they don't really want due to pressure, isolation, or a lack of support.

Key Takeaways:

  • In Human Matters episode four, Parker discusses how many women are pressured or coerced into aborting their preborn children.

  • She notes that 64% of post-abortive women have reported feeling pressure to abort.

  • That pressure is often subtle and could include a boyfriend telling a woman it's simply her decision, without offering her any support.

  • Pro-lifers can help by offering help and letting pregnant women know they are not alone.

The Details:

Human Matters is a show powered by Live Action and hosted by Sami Parker, who dives into some of society's most important trends and topics. In episode four, she counters the adage that abortion is simply a woman's choice, offering examples, statistics, and common sense to point out that countless women feel pressured into getting abortions they don't want — and there's nothing empowering about that.

"We’re told abortion is about empowerment. We’re told it’s about freedom. We’re told it’s about our bodies and our choices. That’s all the language and the marketing that we see about abortion," Parker says.

"But if the reality is that a whole bunch of women are getting abortions because other pro-choice people are even subtly pressuring them into an abortion, then it’s literally not about her choice. It’s the decision she feels forced to make to some degree."

Parker shares a TikTok clip showing a woman admitting that she only went through with an abortion to please her boyfriend and her parents, then highlighting many of the video's comments which show that the woman was not alone in her experience of getting an abortion to please someone else.

"Studies show that 64% of post-abortive women felt pressured to abort," Parker says, noting that sometimes that pressure might be as subtle as a boyfriend who is withdrawing love or support while telling his girlfriend, "It's all your choice."

"So she knows if he is withdrawing his involvement at this point, all signs point to this guy abandoning her if she does embrace the life of her baby. Psychologically, a pregnant mother in this situation knows that the words are 'it’s your choice,' but the hidden truth behind those words is 'this is all on you, and I think you know what’ll end up happening if you choose life'."

The Bottom Line:

Parker ends with a call to action for pro-lifers, reminding them that being a pro-life voice supporting a pregnant mom may be the impetus that a mom needs to choose life for her baby.

"You may be stepping over somebody’s boundary, you may be saying something unpopular. But at least you’ll be saying the truth and being one person in her life who she knows is in her baby’s corner, too."
