HORRIFIC: Mexico Senators want to legalize abortion for children under 13

UPDATE, 10/7/20: The date for the vote has been postponed, perhaps for another week, as pro-life groups work to inform the public about the dangers of the legislation.

10/6/20: Three senators in Mexico have introduced legislation that aims to legalize abortion throughout that mostly pro-life nation. According to Mujeres Libres y Soberanas (Sovereign and Free Women), the full Senate is scheduled to vote on this legislation on October 7, 2020.

The legislation was introduced by Senators Martha Lucía Micher Camarena, Minerva Citlalli Hernández Mora, and Jesusa Rodríguez Ramírez on March 24, 2020, and was discussed in committees on Monday. It seeks to alter multiple laws under the General Health Act, the General Act on the Rights of Children and Adolescents, The General Education Act, the General Population Act, and the General Act on Access to a Life Free of Violence.

In doing so, it would legalize abortion throughout Mexico, allow for minors to undergo abortions and access contraception without the consent of their parents or guardians, and allow for children under the age of 13 to undergo abortions without parental consent by accessing State intervention.

“The senators’ proposed legislation seeks to rob Mexican children of their innocence and dignity. […] The legislation will require schools to promote the free, safe, and pleasant exercise of sexuality for minors,” said Mujeres Libres y Soberanas. “The proposed legislation does not just harm children. The proposed legislation takes aim at the freedom of conscience too. If a doctor declines to perform an abortion, the legislation terms this act of conscience ‘obstetric violence.'”

The true violence isn’t in denying abortion to anyone but in the actual act of abortion itself. Abortion is a deliberate act of violence with the goal of destroying at least one life. Preborn children are subjected to painful deaths including being suctioned out of their environment by such force that it destroys their bodies in the first trimester, by having their limbs torn from their bodies and skulls crushed in second-trimester dismemberment abortions, and by dying by lethal injection of digoxin in the third trimester. Abortion is a known risk factor for increased depression, anxiety, drug use, alcohol use, and suicide in women. Keeping abortion illegal is the best way to protect girls and women from such horrific trauma. The legislation doesn’t just legalize abortion but aims to intertwine abortion and contraception within the fabric of the culture even against the will of parents and pro-life medical professionals.

Abortion Procedures: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Trimesters

“The senators’ proposed legislation imposes serious consequences that violate the rights recognized in international, Mexican federal, and Mexican state law,” explained Mujeres Liberas y Soberanas. “The parental authority of parents to their children, the freedom of education of parents to their children, freedom of conscience, religious freedom, the best interests of the child, the right to life and the right to health are all at risk.

“We strongly reject this proposed legislation. We call on the senators of all parties to protect the innocence and dignity of Mexico’s children. We call on the senators to maintain the primary rights of parents to educate and protect their children. We call on the senators to protect the rights of conscience. And, we call on these senators to ensure that the current legislative framework is respected.”

Currently, abortion is mostly illegal in Mexico though it is allowed in certain circumstances including rape. It is legal up to 12 weeks of pregnancy for any reason in Mexico City and the state of Oaxaca, which only legalized abortion last year. Last month, violence erupted in Mexico City as pro-abortion activists threw bottles, paint, and Molotov cocktails at police which ended up lighting one police officer on fire.
