Father and son ordered to stop donating sperm after allegedly fathering hundreds

A father and son duo in Quebec, Canada, have been court-ordered to stop donating sperm after allegations that, between them, they have fathered hundreds of children.

Key Takeaways:

  • A judge in Quebec has ordered two men to stop donating sperm after a lawsuit against them proceeds.

  • Philippe Normand and his son Dominik Seelos have reportedly fathered over 600 children between them.

  • A woman named "Laurie" has filed a lawsuit against the men, saying they lied about the number of children they had fathered, and had never informed her that they were related. Laurie has given birth to children fathered by both men.

The Details:

Justice Simon Chamberland of the Superior Court of Quebec issued a temporary injunction on March 18, ordering Philippe Normand and his son, Dominik Seelos, to stop donating sperm. According to the National Post, as of November 2024, Normand is accused of fathering at least 162 children, while Seelos is said to have fathered 451.

The injunction is the result of a lawsuit filed by a woman known as "Laurie," who says that three of her four children were conceived with sperm from Normand between 2009 - 2012, while her fourth child was conceived with sperm from Seelos in 2017. Although the transactions were conducted through private donation, Laurie contends that both Normand and Seelos lied about the number of children they had fathered and neglected to inform her that they are related.

As the National Post reported:

"[A]ccording to the plaintiff the two men lied about the number of children already conceived through their sperm donations, with Normand allegedly agreeing to limit his donations to no more than 10 families, except to add to families already started, and Seelos to a maximum of 25 children, also with the exception of adding to existing families. They also allegedly failed to tell her that they were father and son."

In issuing his injunction, Chamberland said the two men had fathered far more children than recommended by experts, and in doing so, put both the children and their mothers at risk.

Why It Matters:

The case is indicative of some of the many problems that can occur within the widely unregulated fertility industry. These men each have hundreds of children who will grow up without a relationship with their biological father, not to mention hundreds of siblings they may never know or may begin relationships without knowing they are related. Often, children conceived via artificial means describe experiencing an identity crisis when they learn of the means of their conception.

Even if the duo hadn't fathered hundreds of children, their actions would still be unethical. When children are created via sperm donation and artificial reproductive technology, this treats children as consumer products made to order at the whim of their parents, commodifying them and disregarding their well-being.
