Indiana man gets 30 years for attempted murder of wife and death of preborn baby

An Indiana man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the attempted murder of his pregnant estranged wife and the feticide of her 20-week preborn child in January 2025.

Key Takeaways:

  • Jeremy McBride shot his pregnant estranged wife in 2025, injuring her and causing the death of her preborn child.

  • McBride was reportedly upset because he believed the child was not his.

  • He has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Details:

Jeremy McBride, 37, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and feticide after shooting his estranged wife, Kaya Netherland, who was 20 weeks pregnant. Though Netherland survived the shooting, her preborn baby did not.

As Live Action News previously reported:

Netherland’s neighbor found McBride standing over Netherland as she was bleeding on the ground. She had been shot five times in the back and was rushed to the hospital, where it was discovered she was 20 weeks pregnant. She survived, but her baby did not. It is unclear, based on news reports, as to whether it was McBride or the neighbor who called 911.

Police were called to the home after the neighbor heard the shooting, and though McBride had fled, they tracked his vehicle using license-plate reader technology. He was arrested after approximately 30 minutes, and later admitted that he wanted to kill both Netherland and the baby because he suspected that the preborn child was not his.

McBride has been sentenced to 30 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with the recommendation that he receive mental health treatment.

Zoom In:

A GoFundMe page established by Netherland's family after the shooting described how excited she was to be a mother. It read:

“She was 5 months pregnant with her miracle baby, after several failed pregnancies in the past, and she has lost her baby due to this outrageous crime committed against her. She is alive, and not paralyzed, thank God, but she has already undergone several surgeries including the removal of her left ovary, left fallopian tube, part of her small intestine, and part of her colon, and some repairs have been made to her uterus."

The Bottom Line:

Homicide is a leading cause of death among pregnant women, who are often targeted by their baby's father. Mothers and their babies deserve safety and protection from violence of all kinds.
