Identical twins give birth on same day to 'brother cousins'

Twin sisters Rachel and Lindsey welcomed baby boys on the same day last week, just 12 hours apart. The babies were born after one sister struggled with infertility.

Key Takeaways:

  • Rachel and Lindsey are identical twin sisters who have always done everything together.

  • After struggling with infertility, Rachel learned she was pregnant. A day later, Lindsey shared that she was also pregnant.

  • The sisters were given the same due date, and on August 26, they welcomed their sons, who are cousins as well as half-brothers genetically.

The Details:

In December, Rachel Schmidtberger learned she was pregnant after "giving up" on becoming a mother due to infertility. While the family celebrated the happy news about Rachel, her identical twin sister, Lindsey Denny — who was already a mom — remained quiet about the fact that she suspected she might also be pregnant again.

A day later, Lindsey took a pregnancy test and confirmed that she, too, was pregnant, Facetiming with Rachel to tell her the news.

In a surprising twist, the sisters were given the same due date. They were shocked, but considered it another "twin connection" that they had experienced their entire lives.

"It's been really fun being pregnant together, especially because she already did it, so I can ask her along the way, like, 'Is it normal that I feel like this?" Rachel laughed.

On August 26 at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, the sisters each gave birth to a baby boy, born just 12 hours apart and delivered by the same OB/GYN, Dr. Sharon Vila-Wright, who rearranged her schedule to be there for both.

Rachel and her husband, Michael, welcomed Owen Michael Hamilton, and Lindsey and her husband, Jared, welcomed Hayes Michael Denny.

Because Rachel and Lindsey are identical twins, their sons are technically genetic half-siblings who have now been dubbed "brother cousins."

The shared pregnancies and due dates were on track for the sisters' close relationship. Rachel and Lindsey have always done everything together. They even attended undergrad and medical school together at the University of Texas and became dermatologists at the same practice.
