Doctors called Tim Tebow a ‘tumor’ to be aborted. Today, he’s a husband and father.

The mother of former NFL player Tim Tebow faced pressure to abort him, with doctors telling her that he was a “tumor.” She refused abortion and trusted God — and now, Tebow is married, and he and his wife have welcomed their first child.

Key Takeaways:

  • Retired NFL player Tim Tebow and his wife Demi-Leigh announced the birth on their first child on Monday — a daughter — sharing photos of the family and thanking followers for their prayers and support.
  • While Tim Tebow’s mother Pam was pregnant with him, doctors had urged her to have an abortion, calling him a ‘tumor.’
  • Tebow’s wife, Demi-Leigh, is also a pro-life advocate who has shared the story of her sister Franje, who was born with significant additional needs.

The Details:

Tim Tebow and his wife Demi-Leigh Tebow announced on social media on Monday that they have welcomed their first child, a daughter.

“7/6/2005. Our daughter is here! We couldn’t be more grateful for the blessing and gift of this new little life,” the couple wrote in a joint message. “We’re so grateful to the whole medical team that assisted us in the best way possible during my labor and delivery. From our doctor to our nurses and all the hospital staff — we are so grateful and thankful for you.”

They also thanked “everyone who’s been praying with us over her arrival. We are so incredibly thankful for all of the love and support we’ve felt.”

In a follow up post, they shared more photos, as well as their daughter’s name — and the meaning behind it.

“Meet our daughter, Daphne Reign Tebow,” they wrote.

“Daphne is a name that’s been close to my heart since I was a little girl. I never got to meet my mom’s mother, but her sister, Daphne, stepped in as a grandma figure to me. She was so special to my mom and I — a tiny, kind and strong South African woman who always had shortbread in the house, was the epitome of grit and grace, loved Jesus, had the voice of an angel and made everyone feel seen and special.”

Demi-Leigh explained that she always knew that if she were ever “blessed with a daughter, I’ll name her Daphne.”

“Reign” is a name that also holds meaning for the couple. “It’s inspired by a little girl Tim and I have loved deeply for years,” she wrote. “Her story has shaped our hearts in ways I can’t even begin to explain. But more than anything, her name reminds us that when you’re adopted into God’s family, you become a child of the King. You were made to rule and reign — not in power, but in purpose, love, and identity.”

The couple first announced their pregnancy in January.

The Backstory:

Tim Tebow has been an outspoken pro-life advocate for years, giving the keynote speech at the 2021 March for Life Rose Dinner Gala, where he said he would rather be known for saving babies than for winning the Super Bowl.

His pro-life story began when his mother, Pam, was pressured to abort him while the family lived in the Philippines. In a speech at the 2018 March for Life, Pam said she bled and cramped throughout the pregnancy.

“The best doctor in town did some tests. She determined that Timmy was a ‘mass of fetal tissue – a tumor,’ and I needed to abort immediately or I would die,” she said. “Because of our love for the life in the womb, we chose to trust God and refused to have an abortion.”

By the end of the pregnancy, only a small piece of the placenta remained attached, leaving Tim malnourished. Doctors called it a miracle that he survived.

Demi-Leigh has also been a pro-life advocate, and has previously shared the story of her sister Franje, who was “born with severe special needs and disabilities” and died in 2019 at the age of 13.

“Franje’s life … was so significant and so special. … I don’t think that we [will] fully know the extent of the purpose that her life has had until one day I get to meet my maker and be with her again,” said Demi-Leigh.

The Bottom Line:

If Tim Tebow’s mother had listened to the doctors and aborted her son, he would not exist today, and neither would his daughter. Abortion doesn’t just end one life; for every abortion, a human being is eliminated, but so are the people who might have been that person’s children, grandchildren, and future generations.
