Washington voters approve disturbing statewide sex ed mandate backed by Planned Parenthood

Voters in Washington state approved a controversial sex education bill on Tuesday, making sweeping changes to the content of sex ed and mandating it in all public K-12 classrooms. Backed by Planned Parenthood, the ballot measure was the first ever statewide referendum on sex ed in the country.

Referendum 90 follows the passage of Senate Bill 5395, which first introduced the revised sex ed curriculum earlier this year. Following the bill’s passage, concerned parents sprang to action and launched a petition campaign, successfully gathering enough signatures to qualify the referendum for a spot on the Nov. 3 ballot. Their attempts at rescinding the controversial curriculum ultimately failed, with 60% of voters in favor of implementing it in the classroom.

Campaigning in favor of the referendum was a group called Safe and Healthy Youth Washington. The Associated Press reports that because the group was largely backed and funded by Planned Parenthood affiliates, it raised significantly more money than Parents for Safe Schools, the opposing group funded by the state’s Republican lawmakers.

The Associated Press reports opponents to the bill were particularly concerned with a cartoon used as part of the curriculum, which they say amounted to teaching sex positions to fourth graders. Other areas of concern include graphic explanations of body parts for children as young as kindergarten, while older children are subjected to a curriculum scenario called “Senior Challenge,” which is portrayed as a contest to see which graduating senior can have sex with the youngest student.

While supporters of the bill claim that parents are still given the right to opt-out of the curriculum, its opponents point out that since the curriculum is designed to be integrated into all classes, it is impossible for parents to prevent their children from exposure to its content.

One website aimed at campaigning against the bill, Reject R-90, quotes a retired police officer identified as Officer Chris in saying, “Based on my experience and training I can confidently say that in my opinion SB5395 the mandated comprehensive sex education bill is nothing but a frame work for grooming children to be victims of sexual abuse and an obscene assault on innocence.”

Any sex ed curriculum backed by Planned Parenthood should raise eyebrows. The abortion giant has a bad track record of offering dangerous and disturbing advice to children about sex and abortion. It is well known for using sex ed programs to groom children and set them up for later abortions. Former Planned Parenthood sex educator Monica Cline has discussed how Planned Parenthood’s ultimate goal through sex education is to increase its bottom line when it comes to abortion, saying, “The sex education grooms them for promiscuity. Grooms them for STD treatment, and grooms them for abortion.”

Given Planned Parenthood’s history and the alarming nature of Washington’s sex ed curriculum, it is disappointing that concerned parents lost the fight against this indoctrination.
