'Over the moon': Three generations born on the same day at the same time
For most families, sharing a birthday is a novelty. For one Massachusetts family, however, it has become a pattern — down to the exact minute.
Three generations — a grandmother, mother, and son — have been born on the same date and time, surprising relatives and hospital staff.
All three births also took place at the same hospital.
Three generations in the same family have been born on March 16 at precisely 3:16 p.m. — a coincidence that has left both relatives and hospital staff stunned.
As reported by People, Mary Jo Peters was born a handful of decades ago on March 16 at 3:16 p.m, and she gave birth to her daughter, Caitlyn O’Brien, more than 30 years ago on the same date and time. Decades later, O'Brien delivered her own son, Shawn, at that same date and time.
“We feel very blessed that this little guy decided to join us on what’s a pretty special day for my mom and me,” O'Brien said.
Peters told the Boston Globe, "I was just over the moon. When [Caitlyn] was born, it was [in] an instant like the best birthday present I will ever get. Well, now [that] being said, I have a second-best birthday present.”
The significance of the timing deepened after the baby’s birth.
O'Brien and her husband had only selected a girl’s name. When they discovered they had a son, they hesitated — until a nurse read aloud a familiar Bible verse: John 3:16. It reads, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (NIV)
The reference prompted a change of plans. The couple chose the name Shawn, the Irish form of John, tying the child’s identity to the verse associated with his birth.
All three births took place at the same hospital, further reinforcing the sense of continuity across generations.
Peters recalled initially hoping her daughter would have a birthday of her own. A nurse at the time offered a different perspective.
“This is the best birthday gift you’ll ever get,” she told her.
The family already celebrates several March birthdays, but this one carries a particular meaning.
“It’s going to add to the chaos,” O'Brien said, “which will be great.”
In a culture that often treats life as random and disconnected, moments like this serve as a reminder that some things feel less like coincidence and more like design.
