School staff allegedly arranged and paid for students’ abortions without telling parents

Update 8/11/2025: Despite claiming that it had only just “learned” of the forced-abortion allegations against Centreville High School staff, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) allegedly knew about the situation months ago. Investigative Journalist Walter Curt took to X to share that “a May 2, 2025 meeting—captured on audio—shows FCPS investigator James Mackie was briefed months earlier by teacher Zenaida Perez about a 17-year-old whose abortion was allegedly arranged and paid for by school social worker Carolina Diaz without parental notification.”

In the recording, Perez, whom a student had confided in about the abortion paid for by the principal and social worker, said that in May, she was “attending meetings and all that with Chad Lehman, who used to be the principal at Centreville High School…So at that time, I had a meeting with Chad Lehman, Michael Parker [FCPS Senior Administrative Employment Specialist] about this pregnancy test situation. And Mr. Lehman told me, ‘Ms. Perez, a pregnancy test is nothing. But an abortion. Because I told him that Carolina Diaz facilitated an abortion for a student. … In November 2021, when she turned 17 years old, she got pregnant. She went to see Carolina Diaz, and [Diaz] facilitated the appointment and all the logistics for an abortion. … And then I told Mr. Parker all that about it. And then I sent an email about the pregnancy cover-up to Mr. Lehman and the abortion and all that. And he didn’t do anything…. He said, ‘I don’t remember that conversation with you.’ And I said, ‘Don’t worry about it. I have the email that I sent you on May 16th when we had the meeting here in your office. And I brought to your attention — the social worker provides pregnancy solutions. I mean, abortions.’ And then they didn’t do anything. He pretended he was working really hard, contacting the nurse and social worker. … The legal guardian knew nothing…. And I have all the evidence about that.”

The recording directly contradicts the narrative put out by FCPS, and Curt stated that Superintendent Michelle Reid only acknowledged the claims of forced abortion after the media ran the story and public outrage erupted. There was no investigation, no public statement, and no parental alert after Perez told Lehman about the allegations in May.

“FCPS sat on allegations of a coerced medical procedure on a minor and potential criminal violations until exposure forced their hand,” said Curt. “Enough spin—issue subpoenas, place every implicated official on leave, preserve every email, text, and purchase record, and put this before a grand jury.

“Parents were kept in the dark; now the lights come on.”

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia told 7News reporter Nick Minock that it has launched an investigation into claims that school staff members allegedly arranged and paid for abortions for students without the knowledge of their parents.

According to reports, staff at Centreville High School took two girls for abortions without telling their parents, a direct violation of Virginia’s parental notification law. Both students were minors at the time, and they said the school principal, Chad Lehman, knew about the abortions and financed them with school funds.

In a statement to 7News, FCPS said, “We learned yesterday of these concerning allegations from 2021. We are launching an immediate and comprehensive investigation as we take all concerns of student wellbeing very seriously.”

The first student in question was 17 years old at the time of the abortion and handwrote a statement in Spanish. The English as a Second Language student said she underwent the abortion in November 2021 and that a school social worker, Carolina Diaz, scheduled the abortion and paid for it.

The second student was five months pregnant and begged to keep her baby. She ran from the abortion business after Diaz allegedly told her she “had no choice” but to have the abortion. The girl later told her teacher, Zenaida Perez, about the incident. Perez said that school administrators tried to keep her quiet and force her resignation.

“The girl never wanted that abortion, and her family was never told,” she said. The girl’s family confirmed in a recording that the school never told them about the abortion appointment. The W.C. Dispatch reported that it heard the recording from the parents and that it is “heartbreaking.”

FCPS policy states that “every effort shall be made to encourage and support students suspecting pregnancy to discuss their concerns with their parents or guardians.” However, it does not say that employees must inform parents of those conversations, though the law is clear that minors can’t have abortions without parental notification.

It states, “No physician shall knowingly perform an abortion, induce any miscarriage or terminate any pregnancy … upon an unemancipated woman under the age of eighteen years unless” he or she has given at least 24 hours notice of his intent to commit the abortion directly by phone to a parent, guardian, or appointed custodian.
