Bishop of Arlington denounces ‘radically unjust’ abortion amendment
Virginia Bishop Michael Burbidge directed priests to read a letter during every Mass in the diocese last Sunday, urging action against two “dangerous ballot initiatives” in the state which remove abortion restrictions and insert disturbinggender ideology into the state constitution.
Bishop Burbidge ordered all parishes in Northern Virginia to read the letter at all Sunday Masses, an action that he has never asked of priests until now.
The first amendment uses vague language to broaden access to abortion, already legal in the state.
The second removes language defending traditional marriage, and inserts dangerous gender ideology by separating gender and sex, which could lead to serious repercussions for pro-life causes.
In the letter, Bishop Burbidge says that “we must together proclaim ‘no!’ to these radically unjust ballot initiatives, in fidelity to God and for the good of all in our society.”
Through the “Catholics Vote No” campaign, the Diocese of Arlington has provided resources and information on the upcoming vote.
The Diocese of Arlington joined other organizations standing against two proposed amendments to the Virginia state constitution. Last Sunday, the same words were heard from every pulpit as Bishop Michael Burbidge’s letter instructing Catholics to vote “no” on Virginia ballot questions one and two was read aloud.
“All of us in the Commonwealth of Virginia will soon face very serious legal threats to the sacredness of human life and the sanctity of marriage,” he wrote.
The two ballot questions mask sweeping changes that could be made to the state constitution.
Ballot question one claims to “protect the freedom to make personal decisions” regarding reproductive health, but the actual text states that this “right” is granted to an “individual” with no qualifier, which would arguably include minors. This would erase any right that parents have to protect vulnerable children. Bishop Burbidge said, “The proposed amendment is extreme. It is unnecessary. And it is wrong.”
Ballot question two manipulates language by “falsely separating the reality of one's sex and gender,” Bishop Burbidge said, making room for dehumanizing gender ideology.
Tom Shakely, Chief Communications Officer for the Arlington diocese, said that Bishop Burbidge believes that “this isn't just a matter of public activism or civic participation, but that it has to be rooted in who we are as Christians.”
Bishop Burbidge clarified that “the Church is not partisan,” but that it “always speaks clearly, faithfully, and truthfully concerning matters of faith and morals in public life… The Church boldly proclaims its 'Yes!' to the protection of the unborn and the sanctity of all human life.”
Sharing the diocesan “Catholics Vote No” campaign, which provides information and ways to share about the upcoming vote with others, he encouraged all to “pledge to vote” and “speak with family, friends, and colleagues, in truth and love” on these issues.
Concluding with a message of hope, he said, “Together, with God's grace, we can protect life, liberty, and the future of our Virginia home.”
