Planned Parenthood fights parental notification law at Nevada Supreme Court

Planned Parenthood has taken its efforts to overturn a Nevada parental notification law to the state's Supreme Court, arguing in a hearing last week that the law should be nixed because it is "vague." The Court has not yet made a decision in the case.

Key Takeaways:

  • A Nevada law requiring parental notification before a minor undergoes an abortion has been repeatedly challenged by Planned Parenthood.

  • In October 2025, after years on hold and years of legal wrangling, the law (passed in 1985 during the reign of Roe v. Wade) was allowed to go into effect.

  • Attorneys for Planned Parenthood argued last week in front of the state Supreme Court, saying the law should be overturned because it is "vague."

  • Justices have not yet made a decision in the case.

The Backstory:

Nevada passed its parental notification law in 1985. The law requires that a parent or guardian is notified before their child receives an abortion, though it does not require the parent to give their consent. Despite its passage, the law never took effect due to Roe v. Wade.

After Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, the state began enacting abortion-related laws, many of which had been dormant for years, including the parental notification requirement.

A lawsuit from the abortion industry quickly blocked the law, but a federal court later lifted the injunction. Planned Parenthood then filed another lawsuit, but that effort to block the law was also halted in the courts.

In October 2025, the law was finally able to take effect. The abortion organization then announced it would appeal that ruling, bringing the fight to the state's Supreme Court.

The Details:

Last week, attorneys for Planned Parenthood argued in front of the court to overturn the law.

According to Courthouse News Service, Planned Parenthood attorney Valentina De Fex said that because the law allows a judicial bypass process for a minor to receive an abortion without notifying her parent but does not spell out how that judicial bypass should work, the law is "vague" and should be overturned.

“Its text lacks guardrails,” she claimed, adding that doctors would be left to determine whether or not the parent had been sufficiently notified. "It leaves doctors with the question — ‘Did I do enough or should I have done more?’" she said.

In response, Attorney Heidi Stern with the Nevada Attorney General’s Office, stated that doctors are not under threat from her office, though she couldn't comment on the actions of local district attorneys.

Justices have not yet ruled on the case.

Why It Matters:

Planned Parenthood is no friend to parents, and views them largely as hindrances to its influence over minors.

As Live Action News reported last year, Planned Parenthood has shown willingness to dispense same-day cross-sex hormones to minors, without a mental health assessment or parental involvement. It responded to a Live Action undercover investigation by attempting to "set the record straight," but...

...[Planned Parenthood] did not deny that it supplies hormones to minors and that it will give hormones to a young person who wants them without a mental health assessment and on the same day as the person’s first appointment.

It’s important to note that Planned Parenthood has proven that its idea of “age-appropriate” is wildly inappropriate. For example, through its sexual education programs, it provides children with sexually explicit books, a ‘sex deck’ of cards, and other indecorous items. It also has a history of offering dangerous sexual advice to teens and of sexualizing young children.

Planned Parenthood has a long record of coercing or even forcing patients into abortion.

It has misled and sexually groomed children.

It has assisted child predators instead of protecting minors.

Planned Parenthood has showing willingness to help sex traffickers to pose as minors' guardians for the purpose of getting them secret abortions, while at the same time fighting against parental consent and notification laws.

Planned Parenthood wants parents and teens to believe it has children’s best interests at heart, but evidence proves otherwise. Planned Parenthood does not have the best interest of children — born or preborn — in mind.

The Bottom Line:

An abortion is a serious procedure which takes the life of the preborn child while forever altering the life of his or her mother.

Planned Parenthood's relentless fight against a law solely meant to ensure a parent is notified when a child undergoes this process clearly reveals that the abortion organization isn't worried about the welfare of young girls — it only wants to remove any obstacles that stand in the way of more abortion.
