Planned Parenthood has closed a facility in Cleveland, Ohio, citing the temporary freezing of Title X funds by the Trump administration due to possible violations of a Trump executive order.
Key Takeaways:
- Planned Parenthood has closed its Cleveland Health Center facility, citing the Trump administration’s freezing of Title X funds.
- Nine Planned Parenthood state affiliates received notices in March, stating that Title X funding was being “temporarily withheld” due to “possible violations” of federal civil rights laws and Trump’s diversity, equity and inclusion executive order.
- Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio will continue to operate six other facilities in the state.
The Details:
According to WKYC, in a Sunday morning message to its donors, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio CEO Erica Wilson-Domer announced the closing of Cleveland Health Center, saying one of the “driving factors” behind the closure is the Trump administration’s temporary freezing of its Title X funds. Planned Parenthood will continue to operate three other facilities in the same county — Old Brooklyn, Rocky River, and Bedford Heights — in addition to facilities in the cities of Akron, Canton, and Kent.
“Please know that we are always looking for ways to cover health care expenses for those in need. All patients received notice of the Cleveland Health Center’s closure, and we have worked to reschedule appointments at one of our three health centers in Cuyahoga County or through the Virtual Health Center,” Wilson-Domer wrote. “We will continue to reach out to patients and be here for them, no matter what.”
Of the direct Title X family planning funding recipients in the U.S., 90% are not Planned Parenthood facilities. Just nine out of 86 Title X grant recipients for 2024 were Planned Parenthood businesses, highlighting that women and families will not be left without health care options if the abortion giant is defunded.
As Live Action News previously reported, “Women will not be harmed if Planned Parenthood is defunded; the abortion corporation serves just two percent (2%) of all women of reproductive age in the United States, and its facilities are outnumbered 25 to 1 by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which can give low-income women the health care they and their children need — without killing their preborn children.”
The Backstory:
In March, after beginning his second term, Trump announced Title X family planning funding would be temporarily withheld, giving organizations 10 days to agree to comply with the administration’s executive orders. Nine Planned Parenthood state affiliates received notices stating that the funding was being “temporarily withheld” due to “possible violations” of federal civil rights laws and Trump’s diversity, equity and inclusion executive order.
During his first term, Trump’s administration removed Title X funding from health facilities that referred patients for abortions or committed abortions, requiring that the money and facilities associated with abortions be kept financially separate from those of health care services. All participating Planned Parenthood affiliates quit the Title X program as a result before former President Biden reinstated funding during his term in office.
The Bottom Line:
Planned Parenthood has committed acts of fraud, racism and discrimination, and failed to report child sexual abuse. Meanwhile, FQHCs that offer women’s health services and do not commit abortions outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities. With 5,300 federally funded health clinics available across the country, women will not lose access to health care when Planned Parenthood facilities shut down.
