Married woman gives away baby created through sex with ‘sperm donor’ found on social media

China, pregnant, pregnancy, surrogacy

A married woman who found a ‘sperm donor’ on social media and had sex with him until she became pregnant has now given the baby away after learning the man lied about who he was.

The 30-year-old woman from Tokyo and her husband wanted a second child but learned that the husband had a hereditary condition. It is unclear why that was of concern since they already had a child together, but it led them to seek a sperm donor through a membership exchange site. He said he was single and in his 20s, had graduated from Kyoto University in Japan, and that he was Japanese. She then reportedly had sex with him 10 times and in June of 2019, she became pregnant.

According to Newsweek, she later found out the ‘donor’ was a married Chinese national who did not graduate from Kyoto University. Newsweek reports, “By the time she learned this information, it was too late to receive an abortion and she gave birth to the baby. Japanese media reported the baby is now in the care of a child care facility in Tokyo.”

She gave away her child, whom she helped to create of her own free will —because that child’s father did not meet her criteria. And now she is suing the so-called donor for $2.8 million for emotional distress, saying he lied to her for sex. No concern is mentioned for the child they created and then abandoned, and no concern is expressed about how her husband or the child’s sibling might feel.

According to Newsweek, “right to know” laws in Japan give the legal right of children of sperm donors to know who the donor is — their biological parent. It is apparently due to this that these so-called donors are now meeting desperate would-be parents through other methods such as social media, which is apparently a growing trend in Japan. Hiroshi Okada, director of the Mirai Life Institute, which opened the first sperm bank in Japan last year, told Japan Insider that 96% of the nearly 150 websites offering sperm donation in the nation are merely hook-up schemes. These men are being paid to create babies they want nothing to do with.

Children are not commodities for adults to create, abandon, and even destroy. Now-adult donor-conceived children have spoken out about feeling like mass-produced products, and it’s time society and the government listen.
