Dutch man born from sperm donor calls IVF and surrogacy 'psychological terror for a child'
A Dutch man born via sperm donation is speaking out about the harms of vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy, and condemning the Dutch prime minister's use of a surrogate to have a child with his partner.
Samme Kors, the child of a sperm donor, spoke against the practice in a recent interview.
Kors appeared on the "Dit is de Dag" radio program and said growing up without a father in his life was harmful to him.
He pointed to Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his partner, Argentine field hockey player Nicolás Keenan, who are having a child using a surrogate, as an example of the "psychological terror" of the fertility industry.
Kors gave an interview with the "Dit is de Dag" radio program, where he spoke about growing up as the child of a sperm donor, and how harmful it is for children to be conceived through IVF and surrogacy.
"What I want to emphasize is that the right to have a child does not exist. But the right to grow up with biological parents does exist," he said. "Article 7 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. And that is being violated by thousands of parents in the Netherlands: by my mother, by my father, also by Rob Jetten and his friend Nico. And you don't hear anything about that."
He also pointed to the recent news of Jetten and Keenan expecting a baby through surrogacy as something that causes "psychological terror."
"I again see exactly what I feel about my own parents. And that there is no thought about the child," he said, adding that it was nice that people are willing to help people like Jetten accomplish their dream of being parents.
However, he cautioned:
But that there is also the consequence that this child grows up with.
There is an egg donor. Her egg is removed. It is inserted in the uterus of a mother. So the child already has two biological mothers, which is already particularly confusing. And that's the way it is. A lot of children who experience it experience it that way.
And then the child is also removed from those two biological mothers. And it grows up with one of the fathers who is not biological to them. I think it's a form of psychological terror for a child.
He also emphasized that the focus needs to be on the children, not the dreams of adults.
"The realization of the dream is emphasized, but not the consequences for the child at all," he said. "So I would very much like to call for a lot more thinking about that."
Regarding the Dutch Prime Minister and his partner, Jetten and Keenan announced they were expecting a child on Instagram, writing, "A very special person is on the way. See you in 2027, little one. There are no words big enough to thank our egg donor, our surrogate mum Lisa and both their families. None of this would be possible without you."
However, commercial surrogacy is illegal in the Netherlands, so the men had to explain that the surrogate mother was not paid to carry a child for them.
"The surrogate mother and the egg donor are known to Jetten and Keenan," a statement from the political party D66, which Jetten is a leader for, said. "They are pleased to be able to help fulfill the wish of the two fathers-to-be to have a child in this way."
Echoing Kors' words, the focus from the couple and the surrogate was overwhelmingly on Jetten and Keenan and their desires for a child. Jetten said "we now have the opportunity to make our dream come true," while Lisa, the surrogate mother, added, “Surrogacy feels like a very special way to help make the dream of our dear friends come true."
Yet the focus should be on the child being created and how this form of conception, in which a child is intentionally robbed of a mother and/or a father, will affect him/her. The fertility industry continues, however, to prioritize the wants of the adults over the rights and needs of the child.
As explained by The Talking Brains Center, a child needs both a mother and a father in his/her life:
The presence and involvement of both parents play a crucial role in shaping a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. While each parent brings unique qualities to the parenting journey, their combined influence helps create a balanced and nurturing environment.
The roles of the father and mother may differ, but both are equally vital in a child’s life.
Research from the Journal of Child and Family Studies explained that mothers are typically more emotionally available, self-controlled, and responsive, while fathers usually provide discipline and structure.
Children who are raised by their married, biological parents are known to do better emotionally and academically, as well as be physically safer than when living with an adult who is not biologically related to them.
Now-adult children, like Kors, who were created via egg/sperm donation or carried by surrogates, have become increasingly open about the negative aspects of their conception, like the desire for a mother or father that they kept secret for fear of hurting their parents, an identity crisis over the part of their family they don't know about, and struggling to feel a connection with the parent who is not biologically related to them.
Children, and protecting their rights and needs, should be the primary focus of the fertility industry. Tragically, this is rarely the case, turning human beings into products to be commissioned, created, and sold to satisfy the desires of their buyers.
