Planned Parenthood’s friendship with Lena Dunham fuels new show
In true Lena Dunham fashion, the controversial writer and actress has launched her latest show promoting abortion with the help of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain.
Actress and writer Leha Dunham’s new show, “Too Much,” is now on Netflix.
Like her previous show, “Girls,” “Too Much” includes scenes promoting abortion.
Planned Parenthood worked with Dunham on both shows to depict abortion in a positive light.
Dunham has been the subject of controversy for her public statements on abortion.
Netflix launched Dunham’s newest show, “Too Much,” earlier this month. Like her previous show “Girls,” which aired on HBO, it features abortion. In the fifth episode, lead character Jessica reflects on the eight-year relationship she had with her ex-boyfriend, Zev, during which the couple dreamed of having children together. But towards the end of the relationship, Jessica cheated on Zev and got pregnant. She didn’t know which man was the father.
During an argument, Jessica told Zev she was pregnant, only for him to be flippant about it:
Jessica: “Do you still love me? At all?”
Zev: “I don’t know.”
Jessica: “OK, well, I’m pregnant, so I guess I’ll go get an abortion or something, if you don’t.”
Zev: “Yeah, that’s probably the right idea.”
Jessica undergoes an abortion, and then, devastated, moves back in with her mother, sister, and grandmother.
The abortion itself is shown on-screen, though it is heavily sanitized. Jessica is shown undergoing anesthesia, and an ultrasound screen can be spotted next to her. Tellingly, there is nothing shown on the screen to indicate that there is a living human baby inside of her — no movement, no heartbeat, nothing.
When Jessica wakes up from the anesthesia, she is heartbroken, but it is largely insinuated to be over her break-up with Zev, and not due to the abortion itself.
The flippant treatment of abortion was also seen in Dunham’s show “Girls.” In a now-viral scene, a character (played by Gillian Jacobs) casually tells her new boyfriend (played by Adam Driver) she has just had an abortion, so they can’t have sex. She has a nonchalant, almost numb attitude, while her boyfriend reacts with disbelief and anger, asking her, “Was it mine?”
The abortion stories Dunham included in “Girls” and “Too Much” weren’t created solely out of Dunham’s own imagination; she worked directly with Planned Parenthood to craft them.
Caren Spruch is the national director of arts and entertainment for the abortion chain, and reached out to Dunham 15 years ago after seeing one of her films.
“It was the best move I ever made,” Spruch said about reaching out to Dunham. “So I decided to write a letter. I packed up a box of shirts and swag from whatever our campaign was at the time, and I sent the box to the set. She called me the day she got it, and that was the beginning of a long relationship.”
Spruch advised Dunham on multiple issues, including how to portray ‘safe sex’ in “Girls,” as well as the abortion discussion that took place between two of the characters — and Spruch made sure it was framed positively. “So truly not stigmatizing her decision. She had an abortion and she was living her best life,” Spruch said. “I was talking to Lena all the time. We did so many projects together.”
And, now, with “Too Much,” Spruch made sure it was the tidy, woman-focused, baby-ignoring Planned Parenthood portrayal of abortion that appeared on-screen.
“So we talked about how the abortion provider was portrayed, because we need nuanced portrayals of what it means to provide these services,” she said. The abortionist in “Too Much” was intentionally shown as kind, caring, and compassionate (though many women have expressed their experiences as the opposite) as a rebuttal against how Spruch said abortion is typically shown.
“I was bemoaning the abhorrent depictions of abortion, where somebody has an unintended pregnancy and they fall down the stairs. They have a miscarriage. They die. They’re evil and shamed and judged.”
Dunham has been open about her pro-abortion advocacy for years. She dressed up as a Planned Parenthood abortionist for Halloween, called abortion “the most basic of all human rights,” and released a fawning pro-Planned Parenthood video that skimped out on the chain’s sordid history.
One of her most controversial takes on abortion was when Dunham announced that she has never had an abortion… but wishes she had.
On her podcast, “Women of the Hour,” Dunham said she was raised to be pro-abortion, but while discussing the so-called “stigma” around abortion, was disturbed during an encounter she had at a Planned Parenthood facility:
I always thought that I myself didn’t stigmatize abortion. I’m a – uh abortion rights activist, it’s a huge part of who I am. But one day, when I was visiting a Planned Parenthood in Texas a few years ago, a young girl walked up to me and asked me if I’d like to be a part of her project in which women share their stories of abortions.
I sort of jumped. ‘I haven’t had an abortion,’ I told her. I wanted to make it really clear to her that as much as I was going out and fighting for other women’s options, I myself had never had an abortion.
And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt it was important that people know I was unblemished in this department.
This made Dunham realize she had internalized “stigma” towards abortion, concluding (emphasis added):
So many people I love – my mother, my best friends – have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons. I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge, and it was a really important moment for me then to realize I had internalized some of what society was throwing at us and I had to put it in the garbage.
Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.
Dunham is often being praised for her supposedly accurate depictions of abortion, but in reality, her writing on the subject is propaganda and an agenda straight from America’s biggest abortion business.
