A Campus Reform analysis has found that public universities in California are quietly adding abortion to school insurance plans.
Key Takeaways:
- Insurance plans for both University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) colleges include abortion coverage.
- UC students are automatically enrolled into the university health care plan, and it is extremely difficult to opt out.
- In 2019, legislation was passed requiring California’s public universities to dispense abortion pills.
The Details:
Campus Reform reported on the rising costs of costs of higher education in California, and how ideological agendas are being included in those costs.
While community colleges do not require students to have health insurance, private universities often auto-enroll students in their plans. Likewise, domestic students at CSU are not required to purchase a university health plan, but international students are, unless they can show proof of other coverage. CSU also requires on-site clinics to dispense abortion pills, as well as ‘transgender services’ like hormones.
But UC students are automatically enrolled into the school health plans, and opting out is an extremely difficult process with multiple requirements. The UC health plans include abortion under covered “services.”
The Backstory:
In 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB24 into law, requiring all health centers at public universities to commit chemical abortions. Previous efforts failed when former Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the bill, despite his pro-abortion position, noting it was not difficult for any California college student to obtain an abortion.
“According to a study sponsored by supporters of this legislation, the average distance to abortion providers in campus communities varies from five to seven miles, not an unreasonable distance,” he said in his statement explaining his decision. “Because the services required by this bill are widely available off-campus, this bill is not necessary.”
Newsom, however, has done all he can to turn California into what he calls an “abortion haven.” And so SB24 was made law, even as college officials expressed skepticism.
“Currently our CSU health centers offer basic health services, however, the administration of medications still requires a level of expertise that our health center staff may not have,” Toni Molle, a CSU spokeswoman, said, adding it could “impose severe costs for liability insurance, safety improvements, medical training and round-the-clock phone support for medical emergencies.”
Unsurprisingly, on-campus abortions quickly began rising. Newsom has also signed legislation into law allowing minors to get secret abortions while using their parents’ health insurance, and offers incentives for medical students to become abortionists.
The Bottom Line:
Governor Gavin Newsom made it clear that he wants to turn his state into an abortion haven, and he continues to ensure the success of this goal.
