Australia considers bill to require medical care for abortion survivors

Australia’s federal Parliament will soon vote on whether a baby who survives an abortion should be given proper medical care or should be left to die as the abortionist intended.

The Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2022 aims to make it mandatory for abortionists and doctors to provide lifesaving treatment to abortion survivors throughout Australia. In cases in which the baby is too young to survive even with medical care, medical professionals would be required to provide “appropriate palliative care.”

According to Spectator, between 2010 and 2020 in Victoria, “Termination of Pregnancy” was listed as the cause of death for 396 newborn babies. In Queensland, it was the cause of death for 328 newborns. In Western Australia, there were 27 confirmed abortion survivors between 1998 and 2017 — and those babies were left to die.

The bill seeks to prevent such deaths from happening when possible. It refers to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which says that “every child has the inherent right to life.” It also states that “States Parties shall ensure to the maximum extent possible the survival and development of the child.”

“Child” is defined by the UN Convention as human beings “below the age of eighteen years.” Children, regardless of the abortion law, are considered persons by the UN Convention at birth; therefore, it stands to reason that children should be given proper care regardless of the circumstances of their birth. In truth, however, every human being has the inherent right to life from the moment he or she comes into being at fertilization, and that right should be protected.

SPHERE, the pro-abortion Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Coalition, called the bill “an infringement on the reproductive rights of pregnant women [which] may be detrimental to their health and wellbeing.”

Pro-abortion advocates often claim that abortion survivors are nothing more than “myths” created by the pro-life movement. However, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the U.S. revealed that over the course of 12 years, more than 100  infants were reported to have survived for at least a short time after abortions. Minnesota’s recent abortion report revealed that five children were born alive during abortions in that state in 2021 alone. The report further added that none of these infants received medical care — in other words, they were all left to die.

Another report found that over 100 babies were born alive following abortions in just five states over approximately a decade. Abortionists themselves have admitted that babies are born alive during abortions often enough that there is an industry term for them: the “dreaded complication.” One instance of a baby born alive following an abortion was caught on tape in a 911 call, and nurses have shared horror stories of being prohibited from providing care for survivors.
