Tejano singer Selena’s pro-life video resurfaces

Selena

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a Mexican-American singer known as the “Tejano Madonna” and “Queen of Tejano Music,” was openly against abortion, and now her pro-life message has resurfaced in light of a new documentary on her life and murder.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Selena was born in 1971 in Freeport, Texas, and she grew up to become a best-selling Latin music artist, earning a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album in 1994.
  • She was vocal about her pro-life views, and she believed in saving sex for marriage.
  • Selena was shot and killed by her fan club’s president and her business associate on March 31, 1995.
  • Netflix is airing a new documentary on Selena’s life, death, and career, but it does not include information on Selena’s family-centric values.

THE CONTEXT:

During her musical career, Selena won several awards for her music, including a Grammy for her 1993 album Live! Her life was tragically cut short in 1995 when her former fan club president murdered her in a Texas hotel. She was just 23 years old.

Her life has been revisited in films, television shows, true crime specials, and, most recently, a documentary produced by Netflix titled Selena y Los Dinos, which debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Her impact on music in the United States, Mexico, and even globally cannot be denied, but one thing that often gets overlooked in her legacy is that Selena was pro-life. In a 1994 interview with Texas Tech University, she expressed her pro-life views.

Selena was asked about teen pregnancy in the Hispanic community, with the interviewer noting that most of the teenagers “end up keeping their child.”

She responded, “Which is good, which is good because I’m against abortions. I don’t think that it’s right.”

Selena expanded on the issue, saying that parents need to educate their children in abstinence.

“It’s kinda hard and it’s very upsetting that you see people, or especially politicians, and I don’t even, I don’t want to get into politics,” the singer continued, “but they encourage kids to use condoms, and I think the parents should encourage the children not to have sex before marriage because if you, you know, stop that right there, then you’re not gonna have teen pregnancy.”

She concluded, “You need to teach your children morals first before they get married, and then children afterwards. It should be marriage and then children afterwards.”

The singer makes an excellent point. Abortion is hard, as it kills a child and harms the mother. In many cases, the abortion industry profits off the suffering that it imposes.

The interviewer, however, asked Selena if she would have had success if she had a child “earlier in life,” and implies that she would not, saying, “You wouldn’t have time to do it.” Selena agreed. The conversation highlights one of the lies that abortion proponents push — that mothers are incapable of finding educational or career success.

THE BOTTOM LIFE:

Media representations of Selena’s career and life have touched on her pro-life views. Netflix could buck this trend of hiding her values, but considering its television series based on her life did not even broach the topic, it is highly unlikely that Netflix or any major media outlet will include information on Selena’s pro-life stance.
