'Sold as a beautiful death': Elderly aunt pressured to die despite refusal
A family in Ontario says their elderly aunt is being repeatedly asked to consider 'medical assistance in dying,' or MAiD, despite having already refused.
A family in Ontario, Canada, said their elderly aunt was receiving treatment in a local hospital and was repeatedly offered 'medical assistance in dying' but refused.
The aunt said her bedmate was similarly "sold" euthanasia by the MAiD team.
Numerous people have spoken about being pressured into MAiD in Canada.
Alex Schadenberg, international chair of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, reported that a family in Ontario, Canada, reached out to him for help. Their elderly aunt was in the hospital receiving treatment, and was being pressured to consider MAiD, and the family wanted to know if there was any way to make them stop. Specifically, they were concerned that the MAiD team would continue asking, and take advantage of the woman when she was in a vulnerable position.
He explained:
The woman told me that her Aunt was asked if she wanted euthanasia twice, in a pretty persuasive manner, and she said NO.
The woman told me that her Aunt was very upset because the person in the bed next to her was sold euthanasia at the bedside. Her Aunt told her that the MAiD team sold euthanasia as a beautiful death and made the person in the bed next to her, who was not asking for euthanasia, fear that she would otherwise have a terrible death.
The Aunt was concerned that the MAiD team might do the same to her, when she was going through a difficult time.
This woman is far from alone in her experience; there have been numerous complaints about people being pressured into MAID, sometimes successfully, in Canada.
Brigitte "GG" Stegemann was killed by MAiD despite having told staff she opposed it, and having clear signs of an inability to consent. Even though Stegemann had told staff she didn't support euthanasia due to her Christian faith, she was approached about it anyway without her family or an advocate present, and despite clear signs of incapacity. She was ultimately euthanized even though she didn't give a final verbal approval, and her euthanasia date had been arranged before final paperwork had even been completed.
A veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has also spoken out, saying he and fellow police veterans are receiving e-mails promoting euthanasia to them, framing it as an "opportunity."
Numerous military veterans have likewise reported that they have been pressured to undergo assisted suicide or euthanasia instead of receiving health care. Kelsi Sheren, an author and veteran, testified before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs about this coercion. “We have 20 with written proof, more with audio recordings, and case managers admitting it,” Sheren said. “Others are too afraid to come forward — they’ve had their benefits threatened.” Among the veterans who have come forward to report being pressured to die are some who say they were seeking treatment for issues like PTSD, mental illness, and substance abuse, and were told to consider simply dying instead.
Christine Gauthier, a veteran and Paralympian, was one of these veterans, and had merely requested a wheelchair ramp for her home. “I have a letter saying that if you’re so desperate, madam, we can offer you MAiD, medical assistance in dying,” Gauthier said. “I was like, ‘I can’t believe that you will… give me an injection to help me die, but you will not give me the tools I need to help me live.’ It was really shocking to hear that kind of comment.”
The MAiD regime in Canada is one of the most extreme in the world, and has devolved to the point where it is not simply enough for people to choose to die; they are now pressured and coerced into it as well.
