San Francisco gym raises over $30k for Planned Parenthood
A women's weight training gym in San Francisco raised over $30,000 for Planned Parenthood in its annual bench press competition fundraiser.
Iron and Mettle is San Francisco's first weight training gym for women.
It holds an annual bench press competition to raise money for abortion.
This year, it raised over $30,000 for Planned Parenthood.
In 2019, Iron and Mettle opened in San Francisco as the city's first strength training gym for women. Several years after opening, the gym began hosting a bench press competition fundraiser, raising money each year for abortion organizations.
Owner Danielle Repetti told CBS News in 2022 that when the gym held its first fundraiser benefitting the Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Project, the idea was a result of the Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
"Our gym is a strength-training studio made for women. We support women. We believe they're strong and resilient," she said. "Abortion is health care. It is, specifically, women's health care. I just couldn't think of a better cause to support in this moment. With Roe v. Wade, it just felt like we had to do something."
The fundraiser is set up as dollars per pounds, meaning the more weight a person bench pressed, the more their sponsors would donate. So if a woman benched 100 pounds, she and her sponsors would each donate $100. The first year, the gym raised over $5,000, and has continued raising money for abortion organizations each year since.
This year, it raised money for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
This year, Iron and Mettle raised over $30,000 for Planned Parenthood. Repetti pointed to her mother as her inspiration for why she is an abortion activist:
“Abortion access has always been personal to me. Growing up, my mom shared her experience of becoming pregnant as a teenager while in an abusive relationship, and how having access to abortion gave her the ability to make a decision about her own future.
I’ve had close friends who’ve had abortions, too. The reality is that almost everyone knows someone who has had one, whether they realize it or not. It’s not always an easy decision, but it should always be their decision to make.”

Domestic violence is something no person should ever experience. But violence against one innocent person does not justify violence against another innocent person.
And the prevalence of abortion has no bearing on the morality of abortion.
What women need and deserve are better support and resources so they don't feel that ending their child's life is their only choice.
Pro-life organizations often understand this. Many supply women with free education classes, childcare, housing, material goods like cribs and car seats, baby formula, health care, and more. Furthermore, the support often continues for years after childbirth, as well as for older siblings, giving families a chance to be successful without having to resort to abortion.
Repetti could raise money for organizations that help uplift and empower women; instead, she funds organizations which tell women their only option is to kill their own children.
