'Pro-life webcast urges 'YES' vote on Missouri's Amendment 3
The Missouri attorney general and governor are urging voters to support Amendment 3 in the upcoming election to put a stop to late-term abortion and 'transgender' procedures for minors in the state.
Coalition Life held a webcast, "Turning the Tide," on Tuesday evening.
Guest speakers, including Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe and Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, urged voters to vote YES on Amendment 3.
Amendment 3 would protect preborn children from abortion and minors from damaging 'transgender' procedures.
A webcast on Tuesday sponsored by the Missouri Right to Life Political Action Committee, "Turning the Tide," discussed the upcoming election and Missouri's Amendment 3, which seeks to protect preborn children from abortion and minors from undergoing damaging gender-related procedures.
A "yes" vote for Amendment 3 would repeal the previous Amendment 3 passed in 2024, which made abortion a constitutional 'right.' The 2026 Amendment 3 would:
· repeal the constitutional right to reproductive freedom, which voters ratified in 2024;
· prohibit abortions except in cases of "medical emergency, fetal anomaly, rape, or incest," and permit abortions in cases of rape or incest only through 12 weeks of gestation;
· prohibit gender transition surgeries for minors, as well as the prescription or administration of cross-sex hormones or puberty-blocking drugs to minors, with an exception for treatments "unrelated to the purpose of a gender transition;" and make other changes.
The amendment would require that parental consent be given for an abortion committed on a minor and would prohibit the sale of fetal organs and tissue.
However, Amendment 3 will not protect babies whose mothers face a medical emergency during pregnancy, babies who are diagnosed with a health condition, or babies who are conceived in rape or incest (before 12 weeks).
The webcast featured multiple speakers. Below are some highlights.
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway spoke during the webcast. "There's so many things I want you to know about Amendment 3," she said, adding:
"First of all, you're gonna hear all of these arguments that it's an extreme measure and women with ectopic pregnancies or other life-threatening complications have no exceptions in this law. That's simply not true.
There are exceptions for the life of the mother in this bill, so we're going to save baby's lives but we also are going to protect women whose life might be threatened because of their pregnancy.
I know some of you don't like exceptions, don't want there to be any exceptions, but this is our very best chance of actually passing something and saving millions of babies' lives."
Hanaway added that she has made efforts to protect women who do have abortions by requiring abortionists to have hospital admitting privileges and malpractice insurance, and that inspections of abortion facilities continue.
"But unfortunately, liberal judges have found all those measures to be unconstitutional. Well, this is our chance to give the legislature its power back by saying that they can regulate those clinics in the constitution."
Former Attorney General Andrew Bailey also spoke during the webcast, saying that "is critical to restore common sense health and safety measures to protect women and children."
He urged the passage of Amendment 3 to end dangerous late term abortions. "Amendment 3 is consistent with Missouri values and it is an important battlefield victory in the long term war to make Missouri the safest state in the nation for women and children," said Bailey.
Abortion survivor and Missouri citizen Melissa Ohden was also present at the webcast.
She shared:
"Forty-nine years ago an abortion was intended to end my life but I survived. I was born alive after saline infusion abortion at approximately 31 weeks. That is not a story I share lately nor do I share it to condemn women. In fact, the work that I do through the Abortion Survivors Network has taught me something very different — that abortion touches far more lives and leaves far more behind than our culture is often willing to acknowledge.
The radical agenda to enshrine abortion as a right in state constitutions is not the will of the people, not in Missouri. We are a pro-life state that doesn't support circumstances like what happened to me and my birth mother ...
The 2024 amendment did not simply change abortion law, it placed abortion through fetal viability into Missouri's constitution... [M]y own state constitution right now says I have a right to an abortion but without first surviving someone else's supposed right to abortion, I never would've lived to exercise this right...."
President of National Right to Life Carole Tobias said Amendment 3 contained "common sense protections," and human rights activist and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Alveda King, shared that passing Amendment 3 is "crucial for all people of faith and conscience to shift culture by speaking out at this moment for fundamental human rights."
King added:
"... We are here to turn the tide for women, children, families, and humanity from the womb to the tomb and beyond. I believe that true commitment to human dignity causes us to protect unborn children, oppose late term abortion, and stand against gender transition surgery for children. ... We can stand for what is right and still love those who disagree with us."
James Lawson, campaign manager for the Her Health, Her Future PAC, told webcast viewers that tens of millions of dollars are "flowing into the state of Missouri"... "because their message is one not of Missouri values but of death." He continued:
"Our message is one of life. ... We're going to speak truth around health and safety standards and late term abortions and the deadly consequences that they have, not only for the children that are affected, but for the mothers that have to undergo those procedures because they've been lied to or because they've been misled."
Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe also addressed the webcast, saying:
"... Amendment 3 ...addresses protections for pre-born children; it addresses health and safety standards for women; it addresses parental involvement and provides permanent constitutional protections involving transgender procedures on minors....
People around the country are watching to see what Missouri does. I believe this is our opportunity to show them who Missouri is and what Missouri values are truly about. We respect the dignity of life; we protect mothers; we defend our children; and we stand with families."
Voting to protect children in Missouri will be held on November 3, but early voting begins on October 20.
