Parents' rights group files complaint against Planned Parenthood's 'gender affirming care'

A parents' rights group in Washington has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho over its "gender affirming services."

Key Takeaways:

  • Planned Parenthood has positioned itself as one of the nation's top providers of so-called “transgender” or “gender affirming care."

  • Children have been targeted by the abortion organization to receive puberty blockers, hormone replacement, and even surgery.

  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the agency responsible for protecting consumers from deceptive or unfair business practices, recently announced that it is investigating practices involved in "gender affirming care," particularly regarding minors.

  • The Washington Parents Network has filed a complaint with the FTC, saying Planned Parenthood is making millions of dollars by giving minors drugs that are not approved by the FDA, and without informing the patients of the risks.

The Details:

A letter sent to the FTC said the Washington Parents Network is comprised of over 3,000 parents across the state; that letter alleged that Planned Parenthood is profiting from the dangerous 'gender affirming' drugs being given to children.

“They’re giving kids medical advice and parents medical advice, which is not supported by any science, and has never been supported by any science, but yet parents believe it, and kids believe it,” Washington Parents Network Executive Director David Spring told The Center Square. “So you wind up with thousands of kids here in Washington state who think that they are transgender, which is actually a concept that doesn't exist. They talk about how counseling is bad for kids and you've got to get kids started on drugs and all this, when there's a mountain of science that shows that these trans drugs are toxic, both the cross sex hormones and the puberty blockers.”

The complaint pointed out that such 'transgender services' have drastically increased, and all the while, those taking them are not being properly informed about the risks.

"These drugs have serious adverse side effects including obesity, tumors and increased rates of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, depression, suicide and permanent sterility," the complaint read. "Yet nowhere on the Planned Parenthood Washington State Affiliate Transgender promotional website page does it provide any warning about either off label non-FDA approved usage or adverse side effects. Instead, Planned Parenthood makes false and deceptive claims including that these drugs are safe and that they reduce the risk of suicide – when in fact these drugs are not safe and they actually increase the risk of suicide."

Why It Matters:

Planned Parenthood has made abortion its main priority, but has also begun shifting to 'transgender services' as well, and has now been named one of the top providers of these gender related practices. It offers cross-sex hormones, puberty blockers, and surgery referrals. According to insurance data, it allegedly saw “1 in 6 U.S. teens and young adults who sought gender hormones” in 2023. There have also been accusations that it has groomed children to become accepting of transgender ideology, which it has a financial stake in promoting.

During a workshop, FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson stated that the agency plans to "examine whether some of the practices in gender-affirming care are deceptive and require greater scrutiny by the FTC…"

Planned Parenthood has claimed that children as young as two can know their "gender identity," and it promotes the idea that a person can change their gender identity anytime they feel like it. One report found that the organization sells hormonal birth control as “gender-affirming care” to minor girls; the birth control pills are used to suppress their hormones, and this is done without the knowledge or approval of their parents.

Clients have also said there is little counseling provided, if any, and that Planned Parenthood does not require any verification from a mental health professional before giving out cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers. Detransitioners have even filed lawsuits against Planned Parenthood, claiming they were.not provided informed consent.

The Bottom Line:

Planned Parenthood has long been accused of deceptive practices, including in regard to abortion, and it is long past time that this organization should be investigated and held accountable.
