Oregon lawmakers launch task force to protect and promote abortion

Oregon lawmakers launch task force to protect and promote abortion

Despite already cementing itself as a staunchly pro-abortion state, Oregon lawmakers have launched a task force aimed at further promoting and protecting abortion within the state.

Key Takeaways:

  • Oregon is a pro-abortion state, with virtually no restrictions whatsoever.

  • The state also promotes abortion, even mandating that employers include abortion in insurance coverage.

  • Pro-abortion Oregon House lawmakers have launched a task force to ensure abortion remains readily available within the state.

The Details:

According to KOIN, pro-abortion House legislators are looking to take action to not only keep abortion funded in Oregon, but to protect abortionists in the state as well.

“The Trump Administration and the Republican Party are trying to strip away access to abortion. We will not let that happen in Oregon,” House Majority Leader Ben Bowman (D) said. “Planned Parenthood is a critical provider of health care in this state and we will fight to protect them from these attacks.”

Sen. Wlnsvey Campos added, “By ending Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood, the Trump Administration is once again targeting the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Planned Parenthood centers provide crucial healthcare services to millions of people across the country and across the political spectrum, and should not be penalized for meeting the needs of patients.”

This move seems to be a clear reaction to abortionists in California and New York breaking laws in pro-life states like Texas and Louisiana by mailing abortion pills into those states. Additionally, the Trump administration has moved to partially defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses.

By The Numbers:

Abortion advocates frequently claim that Planned Parenthood is a legitimate health care provider upon which millions of Americans rely, but this is propaganda.

Planned Parenthood only serves an estimated 2% of American women of reproductive age; according to its own annual reports, the legitimate health care services it does provide have plummeted, while abortions have increased.

Cancer screenings have fallen by 79% since 2004, breast cancer screenings over 80% since 2000, Pap tests over 83% since 2004, prenatal care 80% since 2010, and STI treatments 19% since 2019. Meanwhile, abortions have increased by 100% since 2000.

Additionally, Planned Parenthood is far outnumbered by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other non-profit health clinics. In 2023, for example, FQHCs had 15,000 location sites compared to just 600 Planned Parenthood facilities the same year. Unsurprisingly, FQHCs serve significantly more people, providing cancer screenings, prenatal care, and more.

The Bottom Line:

Oregon already permits abortion through any gestational age, with no waiting periods or informed consent laws, and no parental consent or notification requirements. In addition to insurance mandates, abortion is funded through the state Medicaid program.

Under the Reproductive Health Equity Act, passed in 2017, even self-funded counties are required to pay for abortions. There is, therefore, little-to-no risk of abortion being at risk in Oregon, meaning this is nothing more than pro-abortion political posturing.
