Singer Michele Pillar shares her abortion regret: ‘Abortion is pillage to the soul’

In a recent Live Action video, one woman shared the story of how an abortion radically changed her life — and the mission she is now on to share her story.

Michele Pillar, a Grammy Award nominee, was 17 years old when she found herself pregnant by a man eight years her senior. When she told him the news, he rejected her.

“He pretty much shut the door in my face. That was really hard because I was alone in this journey. Or at least I felt I was,” Pillar said. She visited an abortion facility for information, remembering it being dark and dismal inside.

At the facility in the 1970s, a woman told her that because Roe v. Wade had passed, Pillar now had “choices.” Pillar said the biggest lie the woman told her was that she would come out of the abortion procedure “just fine.”

“No one ever said anything to me about another choice. And so I listened,” she said. “The abortion was such an atrocity to me that I stuffed it down in a hole somewhere in my soul, and that’s where it sat for decades.”

Shortly after her abortion, Pillar came to faith in Christ, she went on to sing professionally as a Christian musician, even touring with Billy Graham. She told no one about her past abortion but noted that when she was on stage in front of thousands of people with Graham, her regret would start to well up inside of her.

Pillar’s career in Christian ministry ended after she had an affair with a married man. She withdrew and started to reconcile herself with the Lord, finding the inspiration in her heart to write a song. After praying for guidance, she had a dream, in which she saw hundreds of children. Among the children was a little boy who approached her and touched her hand.

“As soon as our hands touched, I knew exactly who he was. I knew he was mine. He smiled as if to say, ‘Everything’s ok.’ He wanted me to know that he forgave me. I felt like God said to me, ‘Michele, now it’s time for you to heal.'”

Pillar now shares her story to help others understand the horrors of abortion.

“Abortion is not a procedure. Abortion is pillage to the soul,” she explained. “I’m going to tell the world that it’s a travesty, and I just hope that one girl can hear it.”
