Remains of preborn baby found after mother is murdered in Columbia
UPDATE, 8/3/26: The New York Post reported on August 1 that the remains of Maria Potosí’s baby girl have been found:
The remains of the baby girl ripped from her mother’s womb were found in a wooded area in Colombia after investigators arrested five people in the murder-for-baby plot, which authorities said was orchestrated by a woman the victim believed to be a friend.
Hopes that María Camila Potosí’s newborn would be found safe were dashed when one of the suspects charged in the case led officials to the child’s remains.
The post noted that Yulieth Angulo was behind the deadly plot to steal Potosí's baby:
In court documents reviewed by The Post, officials allege Angulo paid four members of a local street gang about 4 million Colombian pesos — roughly $1,265 — to kidnap and murder 21-year-old Potosí in order to steal her unborn child.
"Pretending to be pregnant herself, Angulo befriended Potosí several months earlier through a city-run program for expectant mothers, authorities said," according to the Post, which added:
... On July 16, Angulo accompanied Potosí to a prenatal appointment and then convinced her to get supplies for the baby... Prosecutors allege that Angulo brought her to a house in Cali’s Alto de Polvorines neighborhood, where the four gang members were waiting. One of the alleged gang members, identified by authorities as Nitzon Mondragón, then attacked and fatally stabbed Potosí.
7/30/26: A community in Colombia is in mourning after a woman who was eight months pregnant was found brutally murdered last week. Her preborn child was ripped from her womb and is still missing.
A 21-year-old pregnant woman in Colombia was found stabbed to death on July 20.
She was eight months pregnant at the time, but her preborn baby girl is still missing.
Police have one suspect in the case, but believe as many as four people may have been involved. They are offering a reward for more information.
Eight-months-pregnant Maria Camila Potosí, 21, was found stabbed to death on July 20, four days after she was last seen alive. Authorities described a gruesome murder scene, and Potosí's preborn baby girl was nowhere to be found.
According to various news reports, on the day of her disappearance Potosí had been at the home of the father of her preborn baby. There, she received a call from a supposed female friend saying she had gifts for her Potosí's baby. Potosí left with the woman on the back of a motorcycle; police later identified and questioned the woman.
Carlos Rincón, the female suspect's former boyfriend, said that she had previously lied to him twice about being pregnant, in one instance telling him that she had lost the baby. It is unclear what charges she is currently facing in regards to the murder and kidnapping.
Gen. Herbert Benavídez, commander of the Cali Police, believes that as many as four suspects are responsible for Potosí's death and her daughter's kidnapping.
Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder announced a $63,000 ($200 million Colombian pesos) reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
“We have increased to $200 million the reward for information that allows identifying and capturing those responsible for the crime against María Camila Potosí,” he wrote on X. “We will continue working with all institutional capacities to uncover the truth and advance in each of the lines of investigation, including the clarification of the facts related to the health status of her baby.”
Potosí's mother, Alba Gomez, pled with the kidnappers to return her baby granddaughter, who was named Alahia.
“The only thing I ask with this appeal and with the hopeful faith I hold that my baby is alive – is for her to be found,” Gomez said. “I ask that the people who have her search their hearts and return her to me.”
