Iowa woman charged with murder after newborn found in daycare's trash
A 20-year-old woman has been arrested after a newborn baby was found dead in the trash of a daycare facility in Perry, Iowa.
Emergency services were called to a daycare facility for reports of a woman experiencing vaginal bleeding.
When the body of a premature baby was found in a trash can, police were dispatched.
20-year-old Stephanie Ubaldo has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Emergency medical services were called to an Iowa daycare facility last week for a woman who was experiencing excessive vaginal bleeding at the Acorns & Oaks Child Care. After being evaluated, she was taken to the hospital.
Less than two hours later, someone called police and alerted them that a premature baby might be in a trash can. After searching the daycare, the baby's body was found in a trash bag inside a garbage can.
The baby was “a fully developed baby girl with the umbilical cord" still attached, and her body showed evidence of head injuries.
Ubaldo was reportedly an employee at the daycare facility who went into labor while at work. She told police that she had known she was pregnant for several months, but kept it a secret.
After giving birth, she admitted the baby was born alive and had been crying, so she killed her daughter. The baby was between 32 and 36 weeks gestation.
She admitted to police that she “intentionally caused injuries to the baby’s face in an effort to stop the baby from crying." She also told hospital staff she gave birth at the facility and placed the little girl into the trash bag, and then into the garbage.
After giving birth and killing her baby, Ubaldo said she had planned to return to work at the daycare as if nothing had happened, but couldn't stop bleeding. She has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Like every state in the country, Iowa has Safe Haven laws. Ubaldo could have safely surrendered her baby up to 90 days after giving birth at any hospital, fire station, or designated Safe Haven location anonymously without facing any criminal charges.
