Illinois lawmakers work to protect Illinois abortionists who commit illegal abortions elsewhere
Illinois lawmakers recently advanced legislation that would make it easier for abortionists to evade accountability. According to Capitol News Illinois, the proposed law aims to protect abortionists who work in multiple states from facing disciplinary action in Illinois for breaking abortion-related laws in states with abortion restrictions.
Currently, if an individual who commits abortions in Illinois is disciplined in a different state for illegal abortion activity, that triggers potential disciplinary action in Illinois as well. But House Bill 1464 would prohibit the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation from revoking, suspending, or taking any disciplinary action against licensed physicians, nurses, and physician assistants who commit illegal abortions in other states.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Maura Hirschauer, claimed that lawmakers had to move quickly on the bill due to the Supreme Court’s pending decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. A ruling is expected from the Court in June, potentially overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing pro-life states to ban abortion, or paving the way for pro-life states to enact pre-viability restrictions.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a different bill in December, despite public opposition, to officially repeal the state’s Parental Notification of Abortion Act after House and Senate lawmakers voted to repeal it in October. As NBC 5 Chicago reported, state residents electronically submitted nearly 50,000 notices of opposition to the legislation before the October vote.
In addition, the governor signed the Illinois Reproductive Health Act into law in 2019, discarding the state’s ban on the horrific partial-birth abortion procedure and allowing for late-term abortions if an abortionist deems it necessary for so-called “health” reasons.
Planned Parenthood officials were on hand at a news conference Thursday with the Illinois House Democratic Caucus to celebrate the passage of HB 1464 in the House in a 68 to 41 vote. The bill now awaits approval in the Senate.
