Hero 911 dispatcher talks woman and friend through safe delivery of baby boy
A July 7 call to 911 had a happy ending when the dispatcher on the phone helped a woman deliver her baby.
A friend of an unnamed woman in Nashville called 911 when the woman went into labor suddenly and unexpectedly. The 911 dispatcher, Kaitlyn Kramer, said she was the one who answered that call and was able to successfully help the friend and the woman deliver the baby boy by talking them through the process.
“Whatever the call comes in, you have to be able to maintain control,” said Kramer.
She said that she has to remind herself to stay calm and that she told a friend of the mother’s who was on the phone, “We’re going to do this together.”
The baby boy was delivered safely as the mother’s friend cheered with excitement, however, she then told Kramer that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. Once the bystanders were able to unwrap it, Kramer heard the baby cry for the first time.
“When I think of a baby being first born, the biggest thing for me is I want to hear them cry,” said Kramer. “And he did that on his own.”
There was another child in the room when the baby was delivered, and hearing that child welcome the baby was special.
“I think my favorite part about this whole situation was there was also another younger child in the room, maybe between the ages of seven and 10 years old. She started talking to the baby, welcoming him to the world. And that absolutely just melted my heart,” said Kramer.
Local 12 news reported that the emergency call only lasted about eight minutes before an ambulance arrived to transport mom and baby to the hospital.
“We get a lot of sad here. Our job is hard. This is one of the reasons that remind me that what I do is important,” said Kramer. “… It just makes me happy to do what I do.”
