Polish Bishops Conference calls for an end to surrogacy
The Polish Bishops’ Conference issued a statement on August 27 condemning surrogacy, calling it "evil and incompatible with the Christian faith and morality." The statement reportedly comes as some seek an expansion of commercial surrogacy in the country.
Poland Bishop Józef Wróbel of the Polish Episcopal Conference Expert Team for Bioethics issued a letter recently condemning surrogacy.
The letter says, “The desire to have children cannot be interpreted as a right to have children, because a child, in the ontological sense, as a human being, is not the property of its parents."
The letter writers call on Polish authorities to prohibit surrogacy and prevent surrogacy companies from operating within the country.
The August 27 letter was issued by Bishop Józef Wróbel on behalf of the Polish Episcopal Conference Expert Team for Bioethics. In it, the conference denounces both IVF and surrogacy, which commodify children. “The desire to have children cannot be interpreted as a right to have children, because a child, in the ontological sense, as a human being, is not the property of its parents,” the letter states.
It goes on to point out the harms of using in-vitro fertilization, which often goes hand-in-hand with surrogacy. It also notes:
"The conception and birth of a child cannot be the subject of a commercial transaction, neither by a woman offering her body for rent for surrogacy, nor by individuals seeking to acquire children through this means."
The conference warns that often, fertility agencies promise a "healthy child." However, "[G]uarantees of healthy offspring included in offers inevitably lead to the conclusion that conceived children, if genetic or developmental disorders are detected, will be killed through eugenic abortion." The bishops remind readers that "the murder of an unborn child is always an extremely evil act."
They also point to the commodification of children, writing;
"Conducting surrogacy outside of Poland does not make it legal. Quite the opposite, this practice takes on the hallmarks of international human trafficking, which cannot be justified by either the desire to have children or the consent of nearly all parties involved.
The Team notes that the subject of the transaction are children, treated as commodities, not as persons endowed with the inalienable dignity inherent in their humanity."
Though surrogacy is not legally recognized in Poland, the conference noted the letter's importance "as more and more offers are appearing in Poland that guarantee having a healthy child through surrogacy."
According to EWTN News, the letter may also have been in response to an event to take place in Warsaw on September 12-13, by the Ukrainian fertility clinic BioTexCom: Center for Human Reproduction.
Though fertility companies appear to be pushing surrogacy, there is also a growing response to end surrogacy globally. Last fall, the European Union issued a resolution condemning the practice of surrogacy. That followed a report from United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem, who called for an end to all surrogacy.
Part of Alsalem's focus was the disservice surrogacy does to the children involved. Her report said:
[F]rom birth, they experience immediate separation from the woman who carried them and are transferred to the commissioning parents – a process that can be emotionally and developmentally significant. Individuals with disrupted development of secure attachment are at higher risk of developing mental disorders. In some cases, the transfer of a child is also delayed or complicated by legal uncertainties surrounding the recognition of parentage, nationality or identity, leaving the child in limbo.
The Polish bishops join these, and many other voices, in calling for an end to surrogacy. The letter concludes with a call to Polish leaders to prohibit surrogacy within Poland and to prevent companies offering surrogacy services from operating within the country.
