A man in India’s Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh has been taken into custody over allegations that he fatally attacked his eight-months-pregnant wife with a sickle after a drunken quarrel — a crime witnessed by the couple's five-year-old son.

The officers who examined the scene discovered wounds on the woman's neck and head consistent with a bladed instrument. As Mansoori’s story kept shifting under interrogation, authorities began treating him as a person of interest in the case.

The inquiry took a decisive turn after the couple’s five-year-old son told police that his father, reportedly drunk, had struck his mother repeatedly with a sickle, causing her death. Police also said the victim was about eight months pregnant, and that the accused had a drinking problem.

Police said Hanif lived in Bijrari village with his wife, Manisha Mansuri, and their two children.

Late on Saturday, he allegedly returned home heavily intoxicated and began arguing with his wife over an issue. When Manisha objected, he allegedly lost control and repeatedly attacked her on the head and neck with a sickle kept nearby, killing her on the spot.

After the incident, Hanif allegedly dialled 112 and falsely claimed that an unidentified person had killed his wife. Station House Officer Praveen Kumar Singh reached the spot and began the investigation, during which the couple’s son revealed what had actually happened.

Mansoori then admitted to killing his wife after the child’s testimony implicated him, and police placed him under arrest for his wife’s death. A murder FIR was filed, and the woman’s remains were dispatched for autopsy. 

According to the Times, Manisha's brother, Rafiq Mansuri, said his sister wed Mansoori in 2021, and endured ongoing abuse tied to demands for her dowry, along with his drinking problem. The Times continued:

[Mansuri] alleged that Hanif had sold 2.5 bighas of his four bighas of land to fund his drinking habit. Rafiq said the family had lodged a case against Hanif in 2024, following which Manisha stayed at her parental home for nine months. She later returned to her matrimonial home after assurances of reform and a mutual settlement, but her husband's violent behaviour allegedly continued.

Villagers described Hanif as erratic and quarrelsome, saying most people in the village kept their distance from him. Police said he made several attempts to mislead investigators, but questioning, the evidence at the scene and the child's testimony exposed his alleged attempt to fabricate the story.

In reality, violence against pregnant women is bound together with the vulnerability of preborn babies. When a pregnant mother is attacked, the baby in her womb is attacked too. The preborn child is not an abstraction; he or she is a real victim whose life is ended before birth.
