Great Britain marks 59 years and more than 11 million lives lost since royal assent for abortion
On October 27, 1967, the Abortion Act received royal assent in Great Britain, leading to more than 11 million lives lost to abortion.
On October 27, 1967, Great Britain's Abortion Act received royal assent, making it legal to commit abortions through 28 weeks of pregnancy. It took effect on April 27 of the following year.
Right to Life UK reports that there have been more than 11 million preborn lives taken since then.
The Crime and Policing Bill passed earlier this year decriminalized self-induced abortion through all nine months of pregnancy for virtually any reason.
In a press release, Right to Life UK marked the anniversary of Great Britain's Abortion Act receiving royal assent, allowing it to become law. This allowed abortion through 28 weeks gestation if two medical providers said it was necessary to prevent risk to the mother's life, physical or mental health, or that of her family members.
The limit was lowered to 24 weeks in 1990, but abortions can still be committed at any time if the preborn baby has been diagnosed with a disability, even one as easily correctable as a club foot or cleft palate.
According to Right to Life UK, 11,256,470 preborn babies have been killed in abortion since then. This equates to one preborn baby killed by abortion every two minutes.
At an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Abortion Act in 2017, Lord Alton criticized the resulting loss of life:
"Upon whom is this everyday violence visited? No one less than the most innocent, the most vulnerable, the child in the womb. Now whilst the abortion lobby who support and wish to extend this practice and the related abortion industry who benefit it deny it, this is a stark reality.
It is a matter of biological fact, simply undeniable, incontrovertible, but from conception, from the time that a human sperm fertilises a human ovum, a new human being begins to exist, as with every member of every mammalian species.
What abortion involves then is not a mere removal of potential life, or a clump of tissues, or a blob of jelly. It's the willful killing of the smallest and most helpless member of the human family in the very place where she should be safest, her mother's womb."
He added that the anniversary marked the "greatest shame of our nation," and mourned the spread of the culture of death.
“As those who recognise and champion human dignity, it is our role and our duty to stand for every silenced voice," he said. “[W]e are not going away, we are not going to remain quiet whilst injustice occurs and we are not going to stop working and educating and campaigning and fighting till we live in a society where the humanity, the dignity and rights of every member of our nation are together recognised."

The Crime and Policing Bill was passed earlier this year, and included a clause which effectively decriminalized women undergoing abortions through all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason, so long as the women are committing the abortions themselves.
This bill passed with less than one hour of debate, with Clause 208 specifically declaring that “no offense is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy.”
Baroness Monckton put forward an amendment to remove Clause 208, which failed, and she later slammed parliament for allowing its inclusion.
Decriminalization would, she said, put women's lives at risk “by removing the current legal deterrent against administering an abortion away from a clinical setting right up to birth."
The law also allows women to commit DIY abortions for any reason, including sex-selective abortion.
Catherine Robinson, Right to Life UK spokesperson, called for pro-lifers to mark the anniversary by taking action, saying:
... As we pause to reflect on this tragedy, this day also serves as a call to action for people around the country to renew their efforts to do everything they can to help ensure more lives are saved from abortion in the future.
This includes contacting MPs and Peers, asking them to ensure that protections for unborn babies are introduced and safeguards are strengthened to protect both mothers and babies – as well as volunteering with pregnancy support centres and joining other pro-life efforts that support mothers and their children in pregnancy and beyond.
By taking action, each one of us can be part of building a pro-life nation that protects and defends the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death.
