Caught on Camera: Baby girl born just outside doors of Dallas hospital

A baby girl made her entrance into the world just outside a hospital in Dallas earlier this month – and a hospital surveillance camera captured the dramatic moment.

Key Takeaways:

  • A baby girl arrived two weeks early in her parents' SUV just outside the hospital entrance at Methodist Dallas Medical Center earlier this month.

  • Her father assisted her mother before more than 20 hospital staff came to their aid.

  • Baby Kamilah was well cared for and is home with her parents and two older sisters.

The Details:

On September 2, Luis Mendoza was driving his wife, Angelica Martinez to Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

She had gone into labor two weeks early and began having strong contractions just two blocks away from the hospital, as reported by both Good Morning America (GMA) and NBCDFW. Once Mendoza pulled up to the hospital, he asked the valet to get help and then rushed to the passenger side of the couple’s SUV to help his wife.

Mendoza made it around the vehicle just in time to catch Baby Kamilah.

"The baby's head started coming out. I rushed to the lobby and the first thing I did is just get out and go around to the passenger side and help deliver the baby," Mendoza recalled.

A crowd of medical personnel – over 20 doctors, nurses and staff members, including the hospital’s president – showed up to help the family, according to GMA and the Methodist Health System.

"As soon as I get around and delivered the baby, everyone started coming out from the hospital,” said Mendoza.

Mom and baby were taken to the hospital’s labor and delivery unit for further care, and were later released in good health. Kamilah is now at home with her parents and two older sisters, aged 10 and 16, GMA reported.

Baby Kamilah’s father was “the hero of the day,” according to Carrie Urista, a nurse manager and hospital front desk volunteer at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

Mendoza had already delivered Kamilah himself and laid her on her mother by the time medical personnel arrived on the scene.

Martinez expressed gratitude that all had gone well, and thanked God for her little daughter.

"We are very, very grateful that everything turned out well. Thanks be to God and that we now have with us our princess Kamilah,” Martinez stated.

On September 16 – Baby Kamilah’s original due date – Martinez and Mendoza returned to Methodist Dallas Medical Center to express their gratitude to the hospital staff and to proudly show off their beautiful newborn daughter.

Mendoza said he and his wife look forward to telling Baby Kamilah the story about the “once-in-a-lifetime moment” of her dramatic birth.
