Baby boy beats winter storm's arrival in Pennsylvania roadside delivery

Hours before the massive winter storm Fern hit multiple states, a baby boy entered the world in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — on the side of an Allegheny County highway.

Key Takeaways:

  • First responders in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, braved the "historic" winter storm last weekend to help a mother who had given birth in a vehicle while on the way to the hospital.

  • Both the mother and her baby boy, who were transported for care separately by EMS, are reportedly doing well.

The Details:

"While most of Allegheny County was preparing for the winter storm, a baby boy made a hurried arrival overnight," announced a Facebook post from the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS, re-posted by Good Morning America (GMA). "Pittsburgh paramedics, Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, and PA State Police troopers located the vehicle just before the E. Ohio Street exit."

The mother was en route to the hospital to deliver her baby when she gave birth to him in her vehicle beside I-279 around midnight on Sunday, January 25. Pittsburgh EMS was dispatched just before 12:30 am.

“Medics performed a quick assessment of both patients, cut the umbilical cord, and prepared [mother and child] for transport,” the Facebook post reported.

After allowing mother and baby some time together, emergency personnel transported them separately for care. The baby was able to breathe and didn’t require resuscitation during transport.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS gave more good news: “Both mother and the child are doing fine.”

The Bureau praised the first responders, who went out while the winter storm was looming, and provided critical healthcare to the mother and her newborn.

“Great work by all!” the Facebook post concludes.

News outlets are calling Pennsylvania’s winter storm "historic," and Pennsylvania, along with at least 24 other states and Washington, D.C., have declared states of emergency due to the damage that resulted.

During the storm, healthcare personnel continued to work tirelessly to deliver babies and provide new mothers and infants with the healthcare they needed.

As one comment on Facebook beneath the birth announcement from the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS notes: “And don’t forget, doctors, nurses and midwives are also making it in to [hospitals] and bringing babies into the world safely while we hunker down at home. Some of them aren’t leaving the hospital for fear of not getting back. So grateful to them.”
