Abortion botched in Chicago the same day Illinois gov signs extreme law

A post-abortive woman at a facility in Chicago was rushed to the hospital last week after suffering from what seems like symptoms of a hemorrhage.

According to Operation Rescue and the Pro-Life Action League, a 911 call was placed for a woman who had undergone a surgical abortion at the Family Planning Associates facility in Chicago. Operation Rescue obtained audio of the 911 call.“The patient had an outpatient surgical procedure today which was uneventful,” a physician’s assistant said. “But after surgery, she started to become hypertensive and tachycardic. She’s not responsive to fluid boluses. She’s responsive, her vitals are stable now that they’re down a little bit. She can get up and walk to the bathroom, so she’s stable but she needs to go to the hospital.”

Sadly, this happened on the same day the Illinois State Senate voted to repeal all protections for preborn babies and declare abortion a “fundamental right,” and as we have seen, this “fundamental right” is sometimes placed over and above the health and safety of women.

Symptoms of uterine hemorrhage include decreased blood pressure and increased heart rate. Hemorrhage is one complication of a surgical abortion, and a patient is at increased risk of hemorrhage during a second semester surgical abortion, versus a procedure in the first trimester. When a patient loses blood volume due to a hemorrhage, the heart starts to beat faster to continue to get oxygen from the blood. Pushing fluids via an IV bolus may help with the loss of pressure in mild to moderate blood loss.

Family Planning Associates is no stranger to injuries, and with the passage of the Illinois law — which removes accountability and certain standards for abortion facilities — injuries may become more common.“Taking away accountability for abortionists and clinics will only make abortion more dangerous,” Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said. “Illinois can expect to see an increase in women suffering serious abortion complications since there is no longer any motivation to improve already bottom-of-the-barrel practices.”

According to Operation Rescue, this is the fifth such injury to occur at the facility in 15 months. In January, a post-abortive patient choked on her own vomit. In August last year, another patient experienced severe hemorrhage, and two other 911 calls for patient hemorrhage were placed in March.
