Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate promises to make abortion a constitutional right
A candidate running for governor of Wisconsin has promised to make abortion a constitutional right if elected.
At a recent campaign stop, David Crowley said he would propose a constitutional amendment creating a right to abortion if elected.
He did not say if it would overturn existing abortion laws in the state.
Wisconsin has been at the center of numerous abortion-related lawsuits.
At a recent campaign stop, gubernatorial candidate David Crowley said he would move to create a constitutional amendment declaring a right to abortion in Wisconsin if elected. When questioned by reporters, he did not clarify how this amendment would affect Wisconsin's existing abortion laws, which protect preborn children from abortion after 20 weeks gestation.
He also contrasted his stance with that of his opponent, Tom Tiffany, who has been rated an "A+" by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America's "Pro-Life Scorecard."

In a statement, Crowley said:
As a husband and father, I believe that every Wisconsinite deserves the freedom to make personal decisions about pregnancy and reproductive healthcare. Meanwhile, three billionaires are spending $34 million to buy this election for MAGA Extremist Congressman Tom Tiffany who is an anti-abortion extremist and who backed a nationwide abortion ban at zero weeks with no exceptions for rape, incest or life of the mother. We can’t let him near the governor’s office.
He also pointed to his daughters as the reason why he wants the amendment put into place.
"I'm a husband," Crowley said. "I'm also a girl dad times three, and so this isn't just a policy debate for me − it's personal. When I look at my three daughters, I think about the Wisconsin I want them to grow up in − a Wisconsin where they have the same rights to make their own decisions as their mother and grandmother had."
In addition to protecting preborn children from abortion after 20 weeks, Wisconsin has several other protections in place, which Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI) filed a lawsuit last month to overturn. This includes a 24-hour waiting period and a requirement that only physicians be allowed to commit abortions.
"The Wisconsin Constitution begins by declaring that all people are born equally free and independent, and possess inherent rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," Tanya Atkinson, the president and CEO of PPWI, said. "This case asks our court to recognize what we believe that promise means: that our constitutional freedom includes the ability to make deeply personal decisions about our reproductive health care without unnecessary government interference."
A former Planned Parenthood attorney was also elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in April.
Voters will be able to choose between Crowley and Tiffany in November.
