Why bring a child into this world?

Why bring a child into this world?

Many of you by now have probably seen this video,  put out by Unilever in celebration of Universal Children’s Day.  Many couples are shown a video which details some of the evils in this world, like death and starving children.

These couples are then asked the following question: Why bring a child into this world?

This is a very good question.  Why  would anyone bring new life when one knows what humans are capable of?

Furthermore, if we can prevent someone from coming into this world and having to deal with evil, why shouldn’t we?

When over 23,000 casualties happen in less than a day, when people brutally murdered by “friends“, when children are bought and sold at truck stops.…the world can seem like a very grim place.

Given all this, why bring a child into such a war-torn, crime-ridden place?

“The world needs more good guys, and I like to think our baby will be one of the good guys.”
“How the story pans out is based upon how we behave in the story.”

The above quotes are two you’ll hear in the video. Good cannot stop simply because it is faced with incredible evil.  What would happen if the good side chose to back away every time something bad rose up against it?

Yes, there is evil in the world.  But there is also good.  And when you have a child, you can raise that child to be one of the good guys, one of the people who can help end some of the suffering.

Like Edmund Burke’s famous quotation says, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.

In our fight to save lives, we will inevitably come against evil, but we must fight back instead of simply giving up.
