Vice President and Second Lady 'excited' to announce pregnancy with fourth baby

On Tuesday, January 20, Second Lady Usha Vance posted a pregnancy announcement to her social media accounts, which Vice President JD Vance reposted. Her pregnancy as a sitting Second Lady is a first in U.S. history.

Key Takeaways:

  • VP JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have announced that they are pregnant with their fourth child, a boy, who is due in July.

  • News outlets have reported that this is the first time in U.S. history that a Second Lady has been pregnant or given birth while serving the country in that role.

The Details:

The pregnancy announcement reads:

We're very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.

During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children.

According to ABC7 News, "This will mark the first time a sitting second lady has had a baby while in office, but it's not without precedent for first ladies."

USA Today added further context, writing, "No wife of a sitting vice president is believed to have ever given birth while her husband was in office. The last wife of a sitting president to give birth was Esther Cleveland, wife of Grover Cleveland, in 1893. First lady Jaqueline Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy, in 1963 had a premature baby, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who died tragically after two days."

JD and Usha Vance have three other children — two sons and a daughter: Ewan is 8, Vivek is 5, and Mirabel is 4.

The White House retweeted the announcement, adding, "The most pro-family administration in history! 🇺🇸 CONGRATULATIONS! ❤️"

Things to Note:

After conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was assassinated, VP Vance spoke at his memorial service, stating, "[Kirk] brought the truth that life was precious, and we must fight to protect it at all stages and at all times."

Vance has at other times spoken out in defense of human life as well as in defense of those who express pro-life beliefs.

He drew ire when he condemned various attacks on pro-life free speech, pointing out that in various places in the UK, pro-life silent prayer has been criminalized, and authorities have warned against pro-life prayer within homes near abortion facility buffer zones in Scotland, as it could be breaking the law.

Last year, VP Vance spoke in person at the March for Life in Washington, D.C., stating that "every single child is a miracle and a gift from God":

“We are proud to march with you and yes, we will be back next year... We march to protect the unborn. We march to proclaim and live out the sacred truth that every single child is a miracle and a gift from God.

Now, each time Usha and I welcomed our own children into the world, we saw firsthand the indescribable beauty of new life… And watching all three of our kids grow, learn, and become who they are today has been the single greatest blessing of our lives.”

Vance will also speak live at the 2026 March for Life on January 23 in D.C.
