Five GOP state senators in Tennessee have requested Governor Bill Haslam to enact a set of emergency rules for abortion clinics to prevent potential fetal organ harvesting in the state, the Associated Press reports.
Paul Bailey, Mae Beavers, Janice Bowling, Dolores Gresham, and Kerry Roberts are asking Haslam to establish a “chain of custody” for fetal remains, and other regulations regarding the handling and disposal of fetal remains. Lawmakers are also requesting a new hotline dedicated to taking reports of illegal activities by abortion facilities, and for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to begin investigating for signs of activities like those exposed by Center for Medical Progress.
Haslam, a Republican who identifies as pro-life, has responded that he shares the senators’ concerns and is “more than willing to have that conversation.”
Selling aborted fetal organs has been illegal in the state since 1989. Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee CEO Jeff Teague called the proposed emergency rules “a solution in search of a problem,” maintaining his chapter of the abortion giant is not involved in selling the body parts of aborted babies.
