'Pro-life Spiderman' sentenced to jail time for Las Vegas climb

Maison DesChamps, known as the "pro-life Spiderman" for his free solo climbs to raise money and bring awareness to pro-life causes, has been sentenced to jail time for climbing the Sphere in Las Vegas in 2024.

Key Takeaways:

  • Maison DesChamps has reportedly been sentenced to 45 days in jail and a $75,000 fine for illegally climbing the Sphere in Las Vegas in 2024.

  • DesChamps made the climb to raise money for a pregnant homeless woman.

  • He has a history of making climbs to raise money and awareness for pro-life causes.

The Details:

A Thomas More Society representative told Live Action News that a statement regarding the sentencing is forthcoming; however, it appears DesChamps has been sentenced to 45 days in jail and $75,000 in restitution, with credit for two days served. We await official court documents to confirm this information.

According to information posted online, DesChamps' wife is currently pregnant with the couple's first child, and is due to give birth in two months. A fundraiser has been created to help the family while he is incarcerated.

Though the fundraiser indicates that free solo climber Alex Honnold also climbed the Sphere recently with no ramifications, news reports confirm that Honnold's climb had been for an upcoming film and that necessary permits were obtained beforehand.

The Backstory:

DesChamps climbed the Sphere in February 2024 in an effort to raise money for a homeless woman named Isabel, who was considering abortion.

He did not have legal clearance to make the climb, and was arrested by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shortly after it was completed.

Three people with DesChamps were also arrested at the time, accused of filming and helping him climb. DesChamps reportedly later agreed to plead guilty to charges of Destroying Property of Another Greater than $5000 and Conspiracy to Destroy Private Property, in exchange for a dismissal of the charges against his friends.

Media reports state that the climb caused more than $100k in damage to the structure.

DesChamps is known for making extreme climbs in an effort to raise money for pregnant mothers and their preborn children. He has climbed at various locations, including the Accenture Tower in Chicago, Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, and the tallest tower in Phoenix. These climbs have typically resulted in his arrest.

In a post on the website for the organization Let Them Live, DesChamps further explained his impetus for the climb, writing:

“At 37, with a life story that’s anything but straightforward, Isabel finds herself at a crossroads. Having had to make the heart-wrenching decision to adopt out three of her children, and with twins living with her ex-husband, she’s now facing the prospect of bringing a new life into this world under the most challenging circumstances imaginable. Homeless, jobless, and with the fear of maternal and infant health risks looming large, she’s scheduled an 11-week abortion for February 10th, believing it to be her only option amidst the chaos.”

The fundraiser raised over $47,000 to support Isabel following the climb. Des Champs reported afterward that Isabel embraced life for her baby.
