Sexual assault survivor dies after botched abortion
An 18-year-old domestic worker in Pakistan allegedly died in May due to complications from an abortion at four or five months gestation after being sexually assaulted.
An 18-year-old has allegedly died following an abortion in Pakistan.
According to reports, after she was raped over a period of months by her employer's son and driver, and was then given abortion drugs. After taking the drugs, she suffered serious complications and was taken to a hospital.
At the hospital, the girl was taken to surgery and ultimately died.
Although the employer had tried to silence her, she gave police a written and video statement detailing her assault before her death.
Police have now added murder charges to the assault charges and are re-interviewing those involved.
According to reports, then teenager was raped by her employer's son and the employer's driver. In both written and video statements, she said she was sexually assaulted multiple times over the span of months by the two suspects and that her employer knew but tried to silence her. When she became pregnant, they took her to a private facility in Raiwind for an abortion.
The rapes were not exposed until the girl was taken to a government hospital for surgery after suffering multiple abortion-related complications. Police said the girl had taken abortion drugs at four or five months pregnant. She suffered severe complications and was rushed to the Services Hospital in Lahore on May 23.
Police said a report was then filed regarding the sexual assaults, but the girl spent two days at the hospital and ultimately died during surgery. Police then added murder charges against the men. The abortion facility may also face charges if the investigation proves it was negligent.
The driver was arrested and taken into custody, but her employer's son was let out on bail. Before her death, the teen had changed her story to accuse only the driver. According to the Minute Mirror, police believe she was coerced to do so by her employer and her father.
Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination that will reveal more details about the cause of her death. Due to the girls' death and additional murder charge, the police will re-question those involved.

Abortion is not safe; it carries multiple risks. Although deceptively touted as "safer than Tylenol," taking the abortion pill includes risks like incomplete abortion, hemorrhaging, and life-threatening infections. When mifepristone ("the abortion pill) is taken beyond 70 days, the risk of incomplete abortion and infection increase.
Abortion drugs are dangerous for women, but they have killed millions of innocent children.
